Bangkok vs Chiang Mai? 🇹🇭 Is Chiang Mai actually a better choice than Bangkok for your next trip to Thailand?
Bangkok may be Thailand’s most famous city, but Chiang Mai might be the one that steals your heart.
After experiencing the chaos, beauty, and energy of Bangkok, I brought Ann to Chiang Mai for the very first time to show her a completely different side of Thailand.
Our northern Thailand adventure started the moment we arrived, heading straight up the winding mountain road to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep to experience the stunning Golden Stupa and peaceful city views before hitting our first local Chiang Mai night market for some amazing street food.
Today, we’re taking our scooter beyond the Old City to show my Filipina girlfriend Ann why Chiang Mai is one of my favorite places in Thailand.
This 24-hour Chiang Mai itinerary is the perfect mix of peaceful nature, mountain views, local food, and unexpected adrenaline. We start Early Owls Cafe, my favorite cafe in Chiang Mai, before heading out to Mae Sa Waterfall to cool off and experience the peaceful nature and beautiful waterfalls.
From there, we ride up through the mountains to Mon Jam Viewpoint for some of the best views in Chiang Mai . We explore the stunning mountain viewpoints, and then race down the mountain on dirt tracks in traditional wooden carts during a serious round of Formula Hmong.
But the real surprise comes when I take Ann to Chiang Mai Jungle Bungee at the X-Centre for a bucket-list tandem bungee jump she did not see coming.
To end this unforgettable day, we stop at Huay Tung Tao Reservoir to climb inside the giant straw gorillas, explore the lakeside photo spots, and watch a peaceful sunset from the floating bungalows.
Choosing between the high energy of Bangkok and the slower, nature-filled vibe of Chiang Mai is a tough call for any traveler. This 24-hour look at northern Thailand shows you exactly what to expect so you can decide which city fits your travel style best.
What’s your vibe when you travel — do you prefer the chaotic energy of a massive city like Bangkok, or the peaceful nature, temples, food, and mountain views of Chiang Mai?

Bangkok may be Thailand's most famous city, but Chiang Mai might be the one that steals your heart.
After showing Ann the chaos, beauty, and energy of Bangkok, I brought her here for the very first
time to experience a completely different side of Thailand. Yesterday we arrived and went straight
up to Wat Doi Suk Thet to experience the stunning golden stupa, mountain views, and one of the most
peaceful introductions to Chiang Mai you could ask for before hitting our very first night market
for some delicious food. But today we're heading out beyond the city to show Ann why Chiang Mai
might just be my favorite place in Thailand. I'm talking about mountain peaks covered in flowers,
hidden waterfalls, Hmong racing, a stunning lakeside sunset, and apparently bungee jumping,
because nothing says peaceful northern Thailand like stepping off a platform attached to a giant
rubber band. My mom will kill me! So stick around, because you just might be asking yourself if
Chiang Mai is actually a better choice than Bangkok for your next trip to Thailand.
Good morning everyone. How are you today? I'm good. How about you? I'm amazing. I slept so well
last night. We had so much fun yesterday. We did, and we ate a lot too. We did. We ate so much at that
market and then stopped at 7-Eleven when we got back to have some ham and cheese toasties. And we
are at my favorite cafe, the Early Owls Cafe, and it has this amazing view of this little lake here
and all this beautiful green around right in the heart of the city, which I think is one of the
coolest things about Chiang Mai is there's just all this nature around. We're going to be going
to experience some more of that soon. Yes we do. Should we grab a seat over here and enjoy a little
breakfast together before we head over to Man Jam for one of the best views in the city?
Oh I can't wait. Let's do it. You got the whole breakfast smorgasbord. You better be hungry.
All right, show them your little breakfast sandwich thing.
It's a whole new world for a Filipina. There's no rice at breakfast.
What do you think? Oh it's so good. So good.
All right, we are going to finish this up and we will see you on the road when we head up to
Man Jam. A-Team Locked and Loaded. Let's hit the road. Let's go.
We drove about 20 minutes and we are making a quick stop at the Mae Sau Waterfall because
today is about showing Ann some of that natural beauty here in Chiang Mai. This is nice.
We can also like go swimming. Yeah. Oh my god.
Yeah, it's just so peaceful up here. Look at that. Oh my god. And it's not much people.
No, not many people. It's beautiful nature.
You want to actually walk out to it? Can we? Yeah, of course. It's cold. Touch the water.
Oh, it is nice and cool. Hi.
What do you think of Thai people? They're so friendly. So friendly.
And they are so happy. I know. Find happiness in nature and to find that pleasure in life
from the things that we have. In my childhood, I think I got my first phone when I was like 18
years old. And so I grew up without phones, without tablet. We play around. We ride on a
caravan. We play on the river. We climb up so many trees. It was so simple. And we don't have
electricity, so we don't need to like work to pay bills and stuff like that. Yeah. So like
looking at these kids, I can relate how simple it is. And you are happy, whatever it is that you
have. Yeah. Yeah, it's beautiful. I'm so glad we could share this.
You're ready to go? Let's do it. Let's go. Oh, it was nice. I'm so proud of my driver.
He really drives good. Thank you. Thank you. Keep up the good work. You can work as a grab here in
Chiang Mai. Just kidding. So we just arrived at Man Jam, which is one of the highest viewpoints
you can get of the surrounding mountains here in Chiang Mai. And it's normally covered in amazing
flowers, all different kinds. But I forgot it's the dry season, so there's only a few flowers.
Yeah. I'm sorry. It's fine. But we can still get a good view. So let's head in
and snap some photos. We take what we can get. That's right. And we don't complain. We don't
complain. I want to go in the hand. Of course you can. Look amazing going out there. Oh my God.
It's beautiful. You coming? I'm coming. Wow. Looks amazing. Yeah. What a great view, even without the
flowers. Yes. I'm glad we came. It was a beautiful ride up here through all those trees and the
winding through the mountain. Do you want to go walk around a little bit? Yeah, we can do that. All right.
What do you think that is? I think we call it kariton. Kariton? Yeah, in the Philippines.
But I don't know what it is. A racing cart? Yeah, it could be, but I think you will not win.
They call this Formula Mung. Really? Instead of Formula One. And they actually race these down
the mountain over here. Maybe we can do that in a minute. Got a nice swing. Do you want a photo on the swing?
All right. Oh my God. This is so nice.
No flowers, but the swing is good. Yeah.
Oh yeah. I feel like it's the wedding day.
So beautiful. And I feel like the view is even better over here. Yeah. And there's actually like
eight or nine of these. So if you want to check on the other side, there's a whole different view.
I already loved it. No complaint. No complaints. I like that. Well, let's head over to the other
side and see if the other one has flowers in it. I doubt it, but you never know.
That's the Instagram versus reality.
So we found one that has flowers, but they're not open today. Unbelievable.
Well, and she almost just got taken by a bee.
I feel like this spot is for couple. There's so much hearts and stuff like that. I know. At least
we got to have a good view. You got to walk through some flowers. Yes, we did. And it just
means we'll have to come back some other time. Maybe five years from now. All right. Let's go
head back to the bike and see if there's some Hmong racing we can do. You ready for some Formula
Hmong? I'm ready. All right, let's go. So you can see right here, these are the carts and they're
going to pull us up the mountain. Okay. We're going to ride down. Have you tried this one before? I
did one time. Are you sure this is safe? You know, I don't know if, you know, safe is the right word,
but fun? Absolutely. We're riding these little carts down the side of a mountain in the dirt.
What could go wrong? Okay. Okay. Don't kill me.
And these are all of the people that didn't make it. I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding.
You ready for some Formula Hmong? Break that one. So we control left, right,
and then break. But we're not going to need the brakes. We're going full speed down the mountain.
Are you ready? Yes. Let's get going.
My ass is hurting. Thank you so much. Man, I am shaking and shaking. How was that? You do
break really well. Thank you. Good job. Oh, are you feeling your adrenaline rushing? Yeah.
Scary. Well, that's good because I have a special stop for you coming up that's going
to really get your adrenaline pumping. Let's get going. Let's do it. So what Ann doesn't know,
she told me that she's always wanted to go bungee jumping and there's a bungee jumping spot
on the way down. So we're going to go over there and get her going crazy when she jumps.
I can't wait to see her reaction. So where are we? I don't know. Where are we? Can you tell me?
Any guesses? No, I feel like it's a shooting range. You feel like it's a shooting range. Am I wrong?
You are wrong. They might have shooting here. Did you not see what it says behind me?
Oh, my God. For real? For real. Are you sure I'm not going to die? I mean,
you're not really. Are we ever sure we're not going to die? I mean,
you're definitely going to die at some point. Not right now. Hopefully not right now, but.
Bungee jumping. That's right. You said you always wanted to go, right? Yeah, well,
no, I'm scared. But that's what makes it fun because you're scared. Scary. All right. Yeah,
you look nervous. I am nervous. I mean, this is not a joke. No, but it's going to be fun.
Come on. Is this safe? Yeah. Ask her. Don't ask me. Is this safe? We're doing for like 20 years,
more than 20 years. Don't worry. And only like 20 people have ever. Don't be like that.
What do you want to do? I want to jump. Tandem bungee. My first
tandem and her first bungee and tandem. All right. Yeah. All right. Let's do it.
Are we set? We paid to die. No, I'm just kidding. We paid to fly.
We paid to fly. He always makes me scared.
If I'm going to die today, to all my family out there, find this guy. It's me. I did it.
I'm scared as hell. You look very cute in your jumpsuit. Yeah, because like what if suddenly
it's stretched and I'm like, oh, they see peaches. It's not good. And then your top comes off. Yes.
Babe, that could be like a million view bungee jump. No. Go pay for a soap.
All right. The time has come. What are you thinking? It's there? Yeah. All the way up there.
Oh my God. Are we going to be fine? I hope so. Look at that. That's
where we're jumping from right there.
This is one of my bucket list. Since we are here, let's just try. Okay, let's figure it out. Yes.
Now you can't get away. I know. I think I might have to start putting this on you permanently.
Okay, now hop. Yeah. Hop, hop, hop like a kangaroo. This is scary. Look.
It's heavy. I think this is like a protection. I'm scared. My heart right now is like
Hopefully I'm not going to have a heart attack or I'm not going to pee myself
because this is very scary. This is safe, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Don't worry. Very?
Okay. I do it every day. Oh, okay. 100%. 100%. I'm trusting my life to you guys.
Ready? Ready. Yes. There's only one way down. There's only one way down.
Yeah. Let me suggest you one thing, Ann. Don't look down too much. Okay, okay.
It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. Relax. It's okay.
It's too high. You don't want it to be too low.
You got this. We got this. Yeah, come on. Easy peasy.
Okay, ready? Yeah. Okay, come here slowly. Yeah, you need to go more. Okay, three, two,
one, bungee. Let's go.
You did so good.
You did so good, baby. So good.
So how was your first bungee? Scary as hell.
We just came from all the way up there.
Hello. The adrenaline is gone.
So what did you think? It's scary but so exciting. It was really like in your skin,
you know, crawling to your skin. But I did it and I'm so proud of myself. And look.
We got free jungle bungee t-shirt and they also gave us stickers and our certificates.
Certificate of being not a coward, right?
Certificate of courage. Same thing. Same thing. It just doesn't sound as good on a bumper sticker.
I want to say thank you for being with me on my first bungee jumping. It was scary and it's so
nice to do it with someone that you have. You can like squeeze like, yes, I'm not alone.
Thank you so much. It was my pleasure. And now we're going to finish up our smoothies and head
over to the lake. And see the sunset. Please come and join us. Boogie boogie boogie boogie boogie.
So we were just driving here and there are some floating bungalows and we're going to watch this
amazing sunset tonight. We're on the way and noticed a photo spot with some giant gorillas
and animals. So we're making a quick little stop over to snap some photos.
Apparently you can climb up into the bum of one. Okay, I will go climb up you. Okay,
you go climb up. I'll be out here. See you on the rooftop. Wow, that is so beautiful.
I wish it was real. Well, maybe we can go and see some elephants soon.
You having a good time? Yes, I feel like going back to being a kid. Good. It's an amazing feeling.
Alright, should we go watch the sunset? Yeah, let's go.
Gorgeous. Wow. Which one do you like? I like all of them. It's so cute. You are like eating here
or swimming? Yeah, if you get here earlier you can order food. Man, what a day. This is a beautiful
spot. It really is. So peaceful out here. It's the perfect place to watch the sunset. Yeah,
you can see the reflection of the sun. It looks like magical. It does look magical. So what do
you think? This is like 24 hours in Chiang Mai for you now. Right now it's 24 hours. What were
your first impressions? I love the simplicity but breathtaking view and the food. I mean like
I gained weight. But yeah, this is a beautiful place.
So many trees. Yeah. A few minutes ride from the mountain and you can see this view.
Amazing. It is. And how did they build this one? I have no idea. I think they just put the
poles in and the weight pulls them down. But yeah, are you excited to explore more of Chiang Mai?
Yes, I am. But right now I am enjoying this peaceful vibe. Yeah, I feel like we got you a great like
we arrived. You got to walk through the city. We went to Wat Doi Suthep last night for the sunset.
You got to experience Buddhism. Today we went to my favorite coffee shop. We saw a waterfall.
We did bungee jumping. We did bungee jumping. We went up to the viewpoint.
We rode the little go-karts down the mountain. Oh, that was so cool too.
And now we get to end with a peaceful sunset. Yeah, I really love this place
so far. It's one of my favorite places in all of the world. I can relate why now.
Well, we have Songkran coming up in a couple of days so make sure to stay tuned for that. It'll
probably be actually posted before this video is but definitely check that out. We have a lot of
fun coming and we still have three weeks in Thailand so I can't wait to share more with you
and with Ann because honestly having you here makes it so much more special for me. You know,
I feel like I'm seeing it all for the first time. Yeah, I know and I kept telling you like
are you sure you want to do this again because you've done this many times, you know,
but this is a different level of experience for me. I'm so happy to hear that. And it's nice to
see it in my own eyes. It really does. I can brag to my friends like, oh, I haven't done that.
But yeah, and I can't wait to do adventure and explore more here. Yeah. Well,
if you enjoyed this video, please give us a big thumbs up, comment, subscribe and don't forget
the bell. Chiang Mai, Thailand. We will see you soon. Bye-bye.
