Every Anglo-Saxon King of England

Edward the Elder

Hello, I'm the Annoying Muppet and today I'm doing the first part of my new history series.
And the first skit I'm going to be talking about today is Alfred the Great. He prevented
England from falling to the Danes, promoted learning and literacy. The confirmation of
Anglo-Saxon chronicles began during his reign. Alfred was not expected to become king. He
was the youngest of the six known children of Aethelwulf, king of the West Saxons. As
a child, Alfred travelled to Rome twice. First as a four-year-old boy and later in the company
of his father. The second king in this video is Edward the Elder. His moniker, the Elder,
does not come from the fact that he was Alfred's oldest son and heir, but was used by historians
to distinguish him from the later king, Edward the Martyr. Edward extended his authority
over almost all of England by conquering the areas previously had been held by Danish invaders.
The third king in this video is Æthelstan. Æthelstan was elected king of Wessex and Mercia, but he had been brought up by his aunt, Æthelflaed, Lady of Mercia.
Crowned king of the whole country at Kingston on September 4th 925, he proceeded to establish
boundaries and rules firmly. The fourth king today is Edmund. On the 26th of May 946, Edmund
was killed in a brawl at Plough Church in Gloucestershire. He succeeded his half-brother,
Æthelstan. He re-established the Anglo-Saxons' control over northern England. The final king
in this video is Eadred. He recovered full control of England by expelling the Vikings
of York, and was a very religious man.
If you enjoyed that video, then watch the second part, Every Anglo-Saxon King of England
Part 2, and I hope you enjoyed. See you next time. Also, like and subscribe.
