East Garston is an ancient village in West Berkshire, situated between Lambourn and Great Shefford in the beautiful Lambourn Valley.

People have lived in this area for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence around East Garston includes prehistoric earthworks and finds dating from the Bronze Age, while the Roman road known as Ermin Street passed through the southern part of the parish on its route between Silchester and Cirencester.

The village's unusual name has Anglo-Saxon origins. Before the Norman Conquest, the Lambourn Hundred was held by Asgar, an important official responsible for horses at the court of Edward the Confessor. The settlement became known as Asgar's tun, essentially Asgar's settlement or estate, which gradually evolved through various forms before East Garston appeared on a map in 1607.

East Garston was part of the wider Lambourn estate at the time of the Domesday survey in 1086. By 1238, it was important enough for a market and fair to be granted here.

At the western end of the village stands All Saints' Church. The building has Late Norman origins dating to around 1190, although much was restored during the Victorian period. The church tower contains six bells which are still rung for services and special occasions.

The River Lambourn is another defining feature of the village. It is a chalk stream fed by underground aquifers, and its flow through East Garston can vary considerably with the seasons and groundwater levels.

The surrounding Lambourn Valley is also famous for horse racing. Its chalk downs provide excellent training ground and racehorse training remains an important part of the local economy and landscape
