JAPANESE MYTHOLOGY
Greetings, viewers of Setia Mata Ketiga.
Today we will continue the story about Japanese mythology, episode 2.
The folklore or culture that is now called Japanese mythology,
almost entirely based on the stories found in Kojiki, Nihon Shoki, and Fudoki from various provinces in Japan.
In other words, most of Japan's mythology is based on various gods and goddesses
who inhabit Takamanohara, a high-altitude heaven,
and only a few sources of written literature can be used as a reference.
In ancient times, each area in Japan was estimated to have a kind of belief in various forms and folklore.
Along with the expansion of the Yamato Empire's power,
various kinds of beliefs were adapted into the Kunitsugami, or worshiped god,
whose shape is almost identical and all are gathered into the Takamanohara mythology.
Meanwhile, areas and settlements that until the next century were not ruled by the Yamato Empire or other central Japanese governments,
such as the Ainu tribes and the people of the Ryukyu Islands each have their own mythology.
In the previous episode, it was mentioned that Susano'o or Takehaya Susano'o no Mikoto was exiled by his father from Kayangan.
Since then, Susano'o has been in the human world.
After his father retired, he gave all his power to his daughter Amaterasu Dewi Matahari.
Because his father has retired, Susano'o means back to Kayangan.
Meanwhile, Amaterasu, his younger sister, also does not like Susano'o, his younger brother.
Because Susano'o likes to make snakes, just like the god Loki,
who is nicknamed the problem seeker in Nordic mythology.
They are the gods who make snakes, causing problems like terrorism.
Amaterasu, his younger sister, always wears armor or iron clothes when Susano'o meets him.
Amaterasu is worried that Susano'o will attack him.
After meeting Susano'o, he asked what Susano'o had been exiled from heaven by his father.
I just want to remember the past while asking if I can go back to heaven again.
Susano'o said.
Amaterasu was actually a little scared of Susano'o, hearing his younger sister's request.
Amaterasu also said,
It's okay if you want to go back to heaven, but there is one condition.
We have to trade each other.
The union of the two of them, Amaterasu created three gods,
while Susano'o created five male gods, then exchanged each other.
Because both sides have their own gods, Susano'o can live in heaven.
These five male gods are also quite important.
The first male god is Ame-no-Oshihomimi-no-Mikoto.
However, Susano'o always makes a fuss after living in heaven,
even throwing dirt on the heads of other gods.
It is indeed mentioned in Japanese mythology,
while in heaven, Susano'o has caused several gods to die.
This makes Amaterasu very scared, then hides in a cave and does not want to go out.
He is the sun god.
After hiding in the cave, the world became dark.
After the world became dark,
8 million gods in heaven tried to persuade Amaterasu to go out.
But Amaterasu closed the door of the cave with a stone.
No one could persuade him to go out.
At that time, 8 million gods met.
Among the gods was a god of wisdom and wisdom named Omoikane.
The god of wisdom and wisdom finally asked the god Isikori-dome
to make a mirror and a mirror of Yata-no-Kagami was created.
The mirror was hung on a tree in front of the entrance to the cave where Amaterasu was.
Then Dewi Fajar, Ame-no-Uzume, danced in front of the gods accompanied by music.
It can be said that they held a feast near the cave where Amaterasu was.
Amaterasu heard the music and laughter of the gods.
Out of curiosity, the sun god opened the door a little and peeped.
Amaterasu was surprised because the gods had a god who shone other than himself.
Because of Amaterasu's curiosity, he approached the mirror and left the cave.
The world immediately became bright.
And the god Tajikara, the god of strength, immediately closed the door of the cave with a stone.
When Dewi Amaterasu was close, he just realized that it was a reflection of the mirror,
just a reflection of himself, not a new Dewi.
When he looked in the mirror, it turned out that he was beautiful and shouldn't have hidden.
He realized that the previous action was a wrong action and Amaterasu was doing his job of brightening the world.
After Amaterasu left the cave, he sent Susanoo back to the human world.
After Susanoo was in the human world, at first there was no food in the world.
Susanoo felt very hungry, then met the god of the Kamado Gami kitchen and asked for food.
The god of the Kamado Gami kitchen then created a lot of food from the mouth, nose, and butt for Susanoo.
That is what is mentioned in Japanese mythology.
Seeing that, Susanoo felt insulted, then killed the god of the Kamado Gami kitchen.
After the god of the Kamado Gami kitchen died, his body turned into a variety of food plants.
Since then, food materials have been available in the world.
After Susanoo was in the human world, he went to a place called Izumo in Shimbane Prefecture, Japan today.
In this place, he met an old nun.
This nun was also a god.
At that time, the human world was ruled by gods.
This nun was called Ashi-Nazuchi and Te-Nazuchi.
The names of these two gods seem short, unlike the names of other gods because their names are short.
Actually, they have a long complete name in other Japanese mythology books.
At that time, the old nun looked sad and cried.
Susanoo approached the old man and asked why they were sad.
The old couple said that there was an eight-headed giant snake in their place.
The giant snake named Orochi always eats one of our girls every year.
Now we only have one girl left.
In the middle of the nun, there is a girl named Kusinada Hime who they are worried about.
Because this year, this one girl's turn will be the last.
When Susanoo saw how beautiful the old man's daughter was, he said,
This is how I will help you solve the problem.
I am Amaterasu's younger brother, the sun god, the great god.
No problem, just leave it to me.
But you have to marry your daughter to me, said Susanoo.
Hearing that, the old nun was surprised and said in her heart,
His younger brother is Amaterasu's sun god.
Of course you can, said Ashi-Nazuchi.
Then Susanoo turned the old couple's daughter into a comb and put it in her hair.
Kusinada Hime, this girl's name has a variety of names in different versions.
The shortest name is Kusina, while the longest we have not found in the related mythology.
Even though this name is the most accurate, that is, the full name should be as long as that.
Next, Susanoo built a wall and opened eight doors.
A container filled with hard sake, which was very intoxicating, was placed in front of each door.
Onon, the big monster, Orochi, liked to drink.
Because Susanoo knew that Orochi was very strong and had to use reason to defeat him.
As a result, Orochi really appeared.
And eight of his heads were immediately dipped into a container of sake in front of the door and started drinking.
After drunk, Susanoo immediately jumped out and pierced all the heads of Orochi.
The story of Orochi, this eight-headed snake, is actually a bit strange.
According to the description in the book of Japanese history, Orochi not only has eight heads, but also eight tails.
While its body is like eight mountains and it is almost impossible to ensure that Orochi is a snake.
There is a high possibility that there are eight snakes.
I don't know if it's really Orochi keeping Orochi or just there.
Obviously, these many-headed snakes do remind of the Yamata no Orochi legend.
Then before this, we have also heard that Shogun Orochi is also a swordsman.
As a Shogun, he may have a Meito sword.
After killing the snake, Susanoo then pierced the heads of Orochi with his sword, Worochi no Ara Masa.
When cutting the tails of Orochi, Susanoo also found a sword named Ame no Murakumo no Surugi on the body of the snake.
This sword was finally given to Amaterasu.
Susanoo considers this as an apology for damaging his castle.
This is one of the three swords of the Japanese book.
Usanagi no Surugi, one of the three Japanese swords besides the mirror of Yata no Kagami and the eye of Yasakani no Magatama.
The combination of these three swords does not have any magical power but proves who is the ruler of Japan.
Only the son of God owns this thing because this thing was originally owned by God.
After accepting the sword, Amaterasu also accepted Susanoo's apology.
And Amaterasu was more and more happy to bring Usanagi's sword.
Then Amaterasu gave the sword to his grandson, Ninigi.
Ninigi went down to earth and became the ruler of Japan and he was related to the Japanese Empire.
There, Usanagi, who was brought by Ninigi, became one of the very valuable assets in the Japanese Empire.
But his existence is hidden and no one can know or no one can see.
Maybe only certain people can see Usanagi's sword.
And in the end it became a tradition that only certain people could see Usanagi.
Recently he gave the sword to the emperor.
Since then, Susanoo has lived with his nephew, none other than Kusinada Hime.
Next we will discuss the descendants of Susanoo.
Okuninushi, descendant of the sixth generation of the god Susanoo.
Okuninushi in Japanese mythology is a god of medicine, agriculture and fertility.
Okuninushi symbolizes the youth of nature because this is in line with his life story which always comes back to life when killed.
Okuninushi has many nicknames because his real name is not written in the two ancient works of Japan, both Kojiki and Nihon-gi.
Okuninushi has 80 male brothers who are called 80 gods.
According to Kojiki, the oldest book of Japanese history, Okuninushi has many children,
including Kimata no Kami, the result of his marriage to Dewi Yagami Hime.
In addition to the opinion of the book Nihon-gi, all have a total of 181 children.
The fact is that all these gods are descendants of the god Susanoo.
As mentioned earlier, the god Susanoo is very evil and likes to make snakes.
So these descendants of the gods are also very evil.
Only gods like Okuninushi who are very gentle and kind.
In the country next to where they live, there is a beautiful woman named Yagami.
Okuninushi and his 80 male brothers all like Princess Yagami Hime.
So they decided to give their hearts to Princess Yagami Hime.
They also went to the neighboring country and met a white squirrel on the street.
This white squirrel is not furry and feels unbearable pain.
Then the squirrel asked the 80 gods for help.
But they even added the story of the squirrel by asking him to swim in the salt sea.
This of course made it more painful.
Because these 80 gods are evil, they deliberately showed some evil tricks.
When Okuninushi saw it, he asked the squirrel,
What's wrong with you?
Actually, I came to this place from another island, but I can't swim.
I want to cross the sea, but I see a lot of crocodiles in the sea.
In mythology, it is said that there are crocodiles, but in Japan there are no crocodiles.
This is the strange thing.
Later I will mention this strange point.
This shows that it may not be Japanese mythology.
The white squirrel meant to use these crocodiles to cross the island.
He also got an idea.
He said to the crocodile,
You have a lot of brothers, so do I.
What if we bet on who has the most brothers?
Okay, who's afraid?
Then how do you count it?
Asked the crocodile.
Just like this.
The squirrel said,
You all form a straight line from this island to the island across.
Then I will jump and count one by one to the other side.
After that, I will know how many brothers you have.
Then we compare the number to see who has the most.
Okay, said the crocodile.
The crocodile's friends also formed a straight line in a row.
Then the squirrel jumped one by one on top of the crocodile's back.
And when it reached the last row, the squirrel was as confused.
You guys are really stupid.
And as soon as he heard, the crocodile finally bit him.
And pinched his skin until it came off.
Finally, the squirrel's fate became like that.
Your fate will not be like this if you bathe in that river.
Said Okuninusi.
Then help the squirrel by wrapping syrup on his body.
After recovering, the squirrel then asked the purpose of Okuninusi.
Okuninusi said he wanted to meet Putri Yagami and express his feelings.
Don't worry, Putri Yagami will definitely choose you.
Said the squirrel.
After that, the squirrel made a prophecy.
The white squirrel turned out to be a god's crown.
In Japanese mythology, white things are considered sacred and meaningful.
For example, white flowers, white turtles, and white squirrels.
After meeting Putri Yagami, the god's friends also conveyed the meaning of his arrival.
But Putri Yagami said,
He doesn't like those 80 gods.
He just likes Okuninusi and wants to marry him.
The 80 gods, who are Okuninusi's brothers, were also very angry.
Then they planned to kill Okuninusi on their way home.
How did they kill Okuninusi?
His brothers would not kill him directly, but create an accident.
They told Okuninusi that there was a boar on this mountain.
They wanted to catch the boar and wrap it.
They asked Okuninusi to guard him at the junction.
While his brothers would send the boar towards Okuninusi.
But after his brothers reached the top of the mountain,
they threw a hot stone down.
And as soon as Okuninusi was greeted, he was burned to death.
That's all for today's episode.
Wait for the continuation in the last episode.
Thank you for your attention.
