Hello peeps. My name is Altbot and in today's video we will find out if Edgar is as peaceful
as his reign or if he is problematic. Let's find out shall we?
King Edgar was born in either 942 or 943. He is the brother of King Edwig and the son of King
Edmund I. In 946 his father, Edmund died. Both Edwig and Edgar were too young to reign so their
uncle King Edard became king instead. But he died a few years into his reign and since he had no
children, the throne passed to Edwig. Edwig was unpopular as he had made decisions that angered
the nobility. So the northern part of England was reigned by Edgar while the southern part
of England was reigned by Edwig. Edwig had also passed after a few years on the throne.
With his first wife Athelflead, he had a son named Edward the Martyr who became king of England after
Edgar. His second marriage or his most known mistress, Wulfrith, he allegedly kidnapped her
from Wilton Abbey and secretly married her. Together the pair had a daughter named Edith
of Wilton or Saint Edith who was canonized by the Catholic Church. His most well-known wife,
Elfthrift, is mostly known as the mother of Æthelred the Unready who is an infamous king
of England. She was also the first queen of England to be crowned alongside her husband
during a coronation ceremony. This set a precedent for future kings and queens to have a coronation
alongside their spouses. But before all of this happened Edgar had heard about her beauty and
wanted somebody to confirm if it was true. So Ilderman Æthelwald set out to find out if the
rumors were true. They were indeed true and Æthelwald usurped the king and married her first.
Æthelwald later died in a hunting accident but it was rumored that Edgar had him killed so he
can marry Elfthrift for himself. This is a part of a legend so it may have been made up or it can
actually be true. At the start of his reign, he had united the kingdom under one rule as he had
control over both the north and the south. He recalled Saint Dunstan from his exile and later
made him his archbishop of Canterbury. I have already mentioned that his wife was the first
woman to be crowned and it's because of this that the spouses of the monarchs of England
have been crowned. So from the information I have gathered, he should be in the unknown category.
The reason why I put him in this category is because the things he allegedly did are only
rumors or mythical so we cannot really prove if they are true or not. Thank you for watching and
I'll see you next time.
