WITHOUT PRODUCT REVIEWS, SPONSORS, DONATIONS AND STICKER SALES, I’d have to go back to work and not do ANY videos, because you can’t live without any income.
Henry from Mowers and Blowers evaluates two damaged Briggs & Stratton engines using a Teslong articulating borescope. After discovering that both have blown connecting rods and destroyed blocks, he determines they cannot be repaired. He strips the engines for usable spare parts and provides technical advice on flywheel timing and diagnostic tools.
Hey guys, how you doing? It's Henry at Mowers and Blowers.
Welcome to another weekend product
review. These are two Briggs & Stratton single cylinder blown engines.
I got them from my friend
Nick from Bellport. He told me both connecting rods are blown.
There's a lot of way to test
whether or not it is actually the connecting rod that was blown,
or it could also be the
synchro balancer that's blown,
but the connecting rod is actually attached. And in that case,
i could probably make one working engine out of two blown ones there's
also another interesting
way to look inside without taking
the whole thing apart you can use a borescope this is the new
Teslong borescope it's articulating this is the TD450s
quick look at the specs 4.5 inches screen
maximum resolution 1920 1080p video resolution 1280 720
and it comes with a memory TF SD card
of 32 gigabytes usually manufacturers do not give you
a storage card they actually make you go out
and buy one but this one's included power source
is 3000 milliamps per hour lithium poly battery
and a rotation angle is maximum up
to 210 degrees let's open it up comes in this nice vinyl
zippered enclosure case oh there it
is that is fancy as you can see instead
of the dial now the
new upgraded one is a lever up
and down like a shift lever makes it a lot more easier instead
of rotating with your hands this is cool here's
the cover that covers the camera which of course
has a light at the end the grip over here
is textured rubber coated for good grippage
plastic encasement here.
Press the power button, long press it, so it's shipped with the battery
dead. Just insert your USB-C charging cable into the side,
and it's charging. Let's see how long
it takes to charge. While we're waiting it for charge a little bit,
let's look at what's on the
other side here. Your USB-C charging cable,
a couple of hooks where you can hook up stuff in
case you drop something in there, user manual,
warranty cards, alcohol wipes to clean the lenses,
safety warnings as you can see with this engine
this is missing the cylinder head already so you
can see the piston right here
so we can easily test to see whether or not the connecting rod
is blown on this engine because if you just turn the crank
and the piston doesn't move it means
the connecting rod is not connected
so you can see i'm turning the crank and the piston is not
moving at all and i also feel a lot of resistance as well
which means that the connecting rod is
definitely broken we can pretty much do the same thing
with this one even though the cylinder head
is still connected you'd need a couple of push rods
in here to see if they move but i'll just
turn it just for the hell of it
to see yeah i don't feel any kind of resistance whatsoever
it looks like this is also blown we could
also stick a screwdriver in this spark plug hole so
on this engine because the cylinder head is still on there
and we don't have any push rods to see
if they move or not simply put a screwdriver there
and turn the crank see if the screwdriver moves
does not move in or out see so this connecting rod is also broken
which is too bad because now
we cannot make one engine out of two
because i don't have any spare connecting rods yep stays
steady doesn't move up or down like that piston stays steady
which means there's nothing connected
to it so since we have two blown connecting rods all we have left
to do is take the whole thing
apart and use some of the parts that i may want to keep
so first i'm going to try to attempt to
drain all the oil from both
of these because i don't want to make too much of a mess
so i'm going to drain
the oil right now this
engine had a lot of oil
this engine had no oil
at all but let's remove this starter because
i could see the hole right there it's just a
Torx screw and there's
the starter and there's the big hole
while we're waiting for the battery
to charge on
the horoscope
we'll remove
this flywheel
so without
opening up
the engines i
just took apart the outside stuff such as the flywheel
the stator some of the throttle brackets
i took the cylinder head off of this one
the accompanying tins the fuel drain plug but the
engine is still complete
and we have not been able to see what's inside yet waiting for the
borescope battery to charge fully before we can stick it in these holes
and check it out without
taking it apart as you can see i
when i removed the cylinder head from this one you can see
has a badly damaged head gasket as well here
are just the parts that i removed the two stators
head bolts accompanying screws
and nuts for the pins oil vents this is the cylinder head from one
of them here's the starter motor from the other it's
a throttle bracket from the other you can
all use these for good parts here's a wiring harness
for the stator to the wiring harness
loom of the tractor you can always use
these these are two flywheel bolts to the crankshaft
you know this flywheel probably get 30 40 bucks
for it has good magnets on it the steel ring here
and when you guys order flywheels from eBay remember
the orientation of your magnet in
relation to the keyway you can see the keyway here
is pointed around two o'clock if your magnet is
pointed at 12 o'clock your keyway is at two
o'clock if you're looking at pictures on eBay
and you want a flywheel, make sure your old one is exactly this.
Two o'clock, 12 o'clock. If you're
going to buy a flywheel that has the magnet at,
let's say, 12 o'clock, and this key is pointed
at 11 o'clock, it's not going to work on your machine.
So make sure that you have the identical
orientation between the magnet
and the keyway pointed in whichever direction. You have to get
that exact one that you have, otherwise the timing will be off,
and it won't work. All right, now let's
the borescope and check out the innards i charged it
for about 15 minutes and it's like a quarter
yeah that's good enough as you can see the five
foot long wire or cord with the camera at the end
you see it articulating
just simply stick it
in the hole going in there
you can see the piston
inside the bore you can also take
pictures of it too much ready
there's a trigger on the back here
trigger it you
can take video
or pictures there you
can see the camshaft
and the teeth so i
triggered it and as you
can see it's recording now
on video now you can look
at it look at the
next video too you can
also take still pictures too like
this trigger just took a picture and
it's all recorded on the 32 gigabyte memory card
that's included right here this is a reset this
is where you charge it you can
also control the intensity of the light at the end of the camera
or off what you see there that is the crankshaft
journal as you can see it's all scraped up and
it's bare which means there's no connecting rod connected
to it there's the connecting rod end
there's the piston that's done
and look you can press magnification and go closer take a picture
and you can get closer for sure the connecting rod
is broken and here's the second engine as
you can see there's also a little hole will it fit
in that little hole not quite fortunately you could
also take out the oil fill reservoir
and go in through there see the terrible carnage in this
one oh my goodness look at that just chunks
and chunks of aluminum there's a destroyed piece right
there so you could just tell for sure connecting rod
is busted look at that terrible so it's
confirmed. Thanks to this borescope you can see
both engines have blown connecting rods. It's just
disgusting inside. This is a very useful tool
for you to check out things in small places. You can
take screenshots. You can record what you're looking through
so you can look at it again in
the comfort of your own home.
Fully articulating camera with light intensity. A lot of different
settings for resolution and how many megapixels you want to use
and it has an included 32 gigabyte
SD or TF micro SD card in it, no need to go
and buy one. They give it to you. Teslong is a name
you can trust, they've been around a long time
this is like the eighth Teslong borescope I've
ever tried, and with the improvements lightweight
and also very thin profile nice 4.5 inch screen
as well as a five foot long cord
so you can use this for sewage, you can look through your water
pipes to see where there's a clog
in your sink, you can give yourself a colonoscopy if you want
don't do that, not without anesthesia you guys
are interested in the Teslong articulating borescope
I'll leave a link in the description, now let's take these apart
and check out the carnage
we already know thanks to the borescope
that they're done skiing, now that we know that both
of these are done, take
off the sump covers
and take
a better look inside
right here we go, the
autopsy, so here is the more modern one
and the bore is in very good condition, however as we know
there's a hole in the block
so this block cannot be ever used, here the tappets they're in good
condition but they usually are free
when it comes with a kit for the camshaft, this camshaft as you
can see is broken right there, split cracked and
the decompression release is gone, so this cam
shaft is garbage, here are the bits to it, there's the
decompression release connecting rod connecting
rod pieces spring to the compression
release dowel pins there's
the governor gear it's actually in
good shape you could save that more pieces
of the connecting rod this is surprising so this is
the synchro balancer along with the links
and the crank shaft and it's in good shape surprisingly
so these these are very useful the links
and the single balancer sometimes the single balancer
breaks and the connecting rod is still attached
so if you have that case you have a very good
single balancer here that you could use
and this has a lot of aluminum transfer on the journal but
nothing you can't smooth out with muriatic acid
or fine grit sandpaper and oil this could be
salvaged and used i have so many i don't know what i'm going
to do with it but nevertheless i will
keep it here is the piston
and connecting rod that belonged in there has decent rings almost
no wear on the piston a little bit maybe
but look it's broken so i have so many of these i'm just
just going to chuck it so we can't use this this could
be saved happens maybe governor gear as for
this one this is the older one see has a single balancer
also and uh good links as well as good
crankshaft of course you're gonna have aluminum transfer on the journal
but you can smooth that
out, so it's not too bad, so this can also be saved crankshaft
and older style single balancer, look here, here's the
older style camshaft, see it's a solid round piece, teeth are still good
and compression release is
functional and not damaged, also has good lobes
so this could actually be saved, good camshaft
leftover connecting rod pieces with the carnage
that we saw with the borescope, this is what I
saw in the borescope
and we knew that the connecting rod was completely destroyed, see
gone, so this piston actually looks really good, good rings too, see
the oil ring moves easily
and the other two rings are easily movable, pop
in and out, not seized on there, this is actually
a really good piston
but this is for like the older models, you know what I might say that as
we both know this engine block cannot be used
either because gaping hole right there, this is
what we used with the borescope to go look inside
so we can't use this even though the
bore seems nice and smooth, we can't use
this, so this is the older block and it came with the
older sump cover, sump cover seems to be in good condition, not damaged
so if I needed a sump cover
for another engine rebuild of this year, this is like
a 15 to 17.5 horsepower one, the older style
notice how the sump cover looks
and the newer sump cover for this, which is probably a 17 to 21
horsepower engine this is the kind with the camshaft
that's not solid round right put your
fingers through here this is the more modern one
and this sump cover looks different from this one
as you can see this has the half moon semicircle part here
which holds the synchro balancer in
place whereas the older one requires this thing
to hold it in place both of these sump covers look
to be in good condition
and i could reuse these i desperately need these because i remember i
i was in the middle of an engine rebuild
and all i was missing was this sump cover
so i could probably use this and uh rebuild another engine
in the future so these two are
salvageable these two engine blocks are done i'll save
this because it's a good piston good cam
serviceable crankshafts on both of these with single balancers
and governor gear i'm going
to throw these two out uh leave it in the garbage
because my garbage men love to recycle dirty
aluminum i think they'll get maybe three dollars
for these whatever three dollars is three dollars
so thanks my friend nick from belport
who gave me these two engines for free for free you can't
argue with free that's right free i can use these parts
for future engine builds and thanks to tesla
for sending me their latest articulating borescope once again
if you're interested in this i'll leave
a link in the description if you do what i do you have
to have one of these saves you a lot of time
hope you guys enjoyed the video remember to like share
