Hello My Crafty Tribe, I have participated in my very first mystery box swap and it was so much fun that I want to challenge you to use one of the same items that I had to use! I hope you will join in all the fun and share and connect with me on Instagram too. Let's make some Dollartree doily trees and some gift bag art. You won't believe what my extra challenging challenge item was!!!

Hello my crafty tribe, this is artsy Maddie, and this is my youngest son Nathan. Hey there, I'm Nathan
I am artsy Maddie's son. You may have noticed I comment on her videos. Yes. Yeah, I'm a very loving son
Yeah, you're the best. So I've recruited some help. We're doing a super fun thing today
It's called the mystery box challenge
And I've had this parcel for a couple weeks, and it is just we're dying to know what's in here
So this is from my wonderful friend Robin from Robin's buys and DIYs
She's such a sweetie, and then I sent a parcel to aunt from Antoinette's
Decorating and there's a whole bunch of us, so this is coordinated by Leah from Junker Necker DIY and my bestie
my YouTube friend
Fabi from arrows DIY, so they're the ones that organize it and it's done every couple months
So be sure to check out the playlist be sure to see what I sent ant and be sure to check out what Robin got from
Ant so there'll be lots of fun surprises, so they're in this box. There is supposed to be three
craft items and then two
Wildcard items, and we have to create the least amount of DIYs that we can so
It's gonna be a challenge
Hopefully not too challenging. I'm a little bit scared, but what's in here so
Nathan you can help me brainstorm, right? Yeah
Happy holidays
Hi, Maddie so nice to participate in this awesome challenge with you here are your mystery items
They are located under the doily all
all of the
Rest is a bonus. Oh
That's so sweet
Message me on Instagram for the two items that are from another aisle if you don't know which one is
But the doily, and I think you can guess the other take care
Robin's buys and DIYs
Awesome, that's a cute card. Thank you Robin
Okay, here. We go. I think this is a bonus. Oh my god. That's so cute
I think it's gonna be backwards on this, but that is so cute. I love it. I absolutely love it. Oh wow
Look at that. Oh, she sent me a whole bunch of stuff. Oh my god, it's spoiled
It really is Christmas
Look at all this awesome stuff
We got some candy cane stickers. What else is in here buddy?
Well you got some extra Christmas stuff some silver stuff that really goes
Silver um oh you got a picket fence interesting
And oh you got some
Cool stickers some some cat stickers. It looks like
You got foam letter stickers or green
You got some white mesh
All right exactly
So I always decorate with white and silver and a little bit of teal for Christmas
So hopefully we can work this in. You got some tape with some ring on it. Oh I love washi tape. Thank you Robin
I love to do planners and scrapbooking
This is so sweet. Thank you
Dream plan do oh I love it. This is awesome. I wonder okay, so oh she just spoiled me rotten
You got some oh monkey stickers
Look at all this stuff Robin you're too sweet. Oh my goodness
I'm so lucky wow I love stickers
This is like you
Coin wrappers
Coin wrappers, okay, we can do something with this. I don't know what but we can do something
Okay, you've got a color your own ornament
I didn't see those at my dollar tree perfect. Oh, you've got a little tube of glitter glitter
We're gonna have to make sure to save some of those for our tray, yeah
Some unicorn
Balloon things
And then finally you have this nice
Stencil
All right, that seems to be everything oh, I'm not totally
Sure
I'm pretty sure you've got the doily right did you get the doily?
Okay, so two items that are from another aisle if you don't know which one
But one is the doily and I think you can guess the other
So the doily and these coin wrappers, they're dime wrappers
Okay, so I'm gonna have to think on this do you have any ideas off the top of your head uh?
Well, you could do a little truck thing make these the wheels
I'm just thinking off the top of my head. I I'm not the one with the craft channel
But I'm sure we can come up with something
So I just dove right into this hardest challenge item
I decided I came up with an idea and I just decided to go for it
So I am gluing together the flat ends of the coin wrappers
so the part that doesn't have the hard rolled edge to it and
I decided to use white glue just so that they wouldn't get any thicker and that they would still be a little bit malleable once
they had dried and
Then I am taking 11 of the dime wrappers and gluing them. So hot glue high temperature
Halfway on to the one beside it. So you'll see here. I just put down the glue and
Slide the other one halfway over top of the coin wrapper underneath
So once I had the 11 of them all attached you just have to be patient and wait for the hot glue to dry
Because they will want to pull apart a little bit on you
So once I knew that 11, so I'm actually wrapping them around a 5 inch styrofoam cone, too
This is from Dollar Tree as well
So once I knew that 11 would fit well around the bottom of this cone
Then I just wrapped it right around in a circle and just held it until the hot glue dried
So you do you just have to be really patient and just actually wait for it to dry
So then I just did a dry fit to make sure that it would fit exactly how I wanted it to onto the cone
They didn't work out quite as nicely as I hoped they would
I mean it is just paper and it did get a little bit
Wrinkly and stuff, but you'll have to let me know
This is the idea I've come up with so I did have a few more ideas since then
I actually got really inspired by these coin rolls. But
Anyway, you'll have to let me know what you think. So the next row I did seven and
Same thing just glued them halfway on to each other
waited for the glue to dry
Did another dry fit on top? So I'm gonna slide this one down on top
We're actually going to do three layers of coin wrappers on here
So you just have to spread them out a little bit just to get them to slide down on top of the other set of
rolls
So I'm just dry fitting everything at this point. I'm not gluing it to the cone yet and
There's a reason for that too. So right now I'm working with the high
Temperature on my hot glue gun and then we're gonna have to change to the low temperature
To actually attach it to the styrofoam because the the high temperature on the hot glue is just too hot
It just melts the styrofoam away too much
So then for the top layer, this is five so five coin rollers and this is for the five inch cone
Dollar Tree does sell a smaller one and a larger one
So this is what I used for the five inch cone just if you wanted to try and remake this
So here we're gonna turn the temperature down to low wait for it to cool down a bit and
Then I'm gonna glue it into place onto the cone. So just a tiny bit of glue
It doesn't take much and then just actually gluing them down to the cone. So you guys will have to let me know
like if you
Coin wrappers to craft with what ideas come into your head and like do you think this is fun enough?
I would love to challenge you guys to do this as well to do something with coin wrappers
I just thought it was so fun. Anyway, so to protect the styrofoam from spray paint
I gave it some of that acrylic sealer spray
Just so that it wouldn't eat the styrofoam too much because I just wanted to get a primer on there just to block all the
printing that's on the paper and
Then once I had the primer on then I just went and did a base coat of this light green
So I just mixed some greens that I had here to kind of get a pale shade of green as my base coat
So I just went in and got into all the little crevices and stuff tried to get a good coat on there
Then for the top coat, I'm just gonna kind of get like a fun
Brighter green it's gonna go with this illustrated gift bag that we use later on here. So kind of a fun
Happy green not your regular Christmas green. This all has a little bit of a
Illustrated cartoony feel to it just to go with the gift bag that I was inspired by as well
So for the top I decided to actually go with the medium size
Styrofoam star these are also from Dollar Tree as well
And then I just measured it out to notch into the star just so that it would sit down on top of that tree
Just because there was no way I could get it into a finer point than that
At the top of the tree. So this will just help camouflage that and make it look a little funner and nicer
So I just took my time made the little notch just kind of a little square type notch out of it for
For the star to sit down onto the tree
so then again just using the low temperature on the hot glue because this is styrofoam as well and
Then once I had that glued down I wanted to use some snowy paint
So I've done this in the past just using some
shaving cream
That's actually Dollar Tree shaving cream and then a little bit of white paint and just a little bit of glue
Just to make sure that it's all bonding together
Well stir it up really well and you get kind of a fluffy snow paint. This is great for lots of things around Christmas time
So then I just want it to look like the snow is sitting on
Like as if these little coin rolls are kind of the funny branches of the tree
So just trying to think like snow and where it would fall on all the edges
And just kind of settle into those little crevices and stuff
You'll notice with that base coat to like showing through a little bit
I kind of watered down that green and did kind of a streaky effect on it just to kind of make it look illustrated
Just like as if it were a kind of a watercolor
Creation sort of thing and then for the top just did some fun glue
With a little bit of glitter just to give it some fun kind of sparkle
So I just got a whole bunch of glue sitting on top of the star and then just shook some little white
sparklies on there
And then here is our final result
So I've come up with more ideas I would love to actually do a video I think of just coin wrapper ideas
Do you guys think that would be fun?
I would love it. If you guys make anything with coin wrappers if you would tag me on Instagram, I think that would be so fun
So here for the next project, I'm just gonna stain two dowels. So I have one square dowel
I it was about 16 inches long and I'm just staining the middle of it
So I don't need to worry about the bottom or the top and then I did a round dowel
That's just a little bit shorter about 13 inches
So then I am using the doily from Robin and I just folded it in half and then I designed a little tree stencil
That would fit perfectly on this doily. So if you guys are wanting to recreate these
I've created a printable pattern and I'll share it on my Google Drives with you guys
So there'll be a link for that in the description box
So just getting it all pinned down to this doily, it's not quite straight
It wants to pull a little bit. So the pins just kind of help keep that all in place when you're cutting it
if you guys don't have spring-loaded scissors, I
Highly recommend spring-loaded scissors for fabric or your best friend and then just keep them good
Keep them for your fabrics whenever you're working with fabrics. So this was a little remnant of quilt batting
So if you have any friends that are quilters
Just ask them for their scraps. That's exactly what this is
It was just like a little remnant at the thrift store
Obviously just a bit extra that somebody didn't use from their quilts and I just thought it was the prettiest like that natural cotton color
Just so pretty. So then I'm gonna tack the doilies to the quilt batting
So I'm not gonna sew for this project. Although I think this would look very beautiful sewn as well
But just because I know most of you just like to hot glue and craft we'll just stick with the hot glue and crafting so
I'm just gonna work slowly. So with each point of the tree, I'll just stop and do this stuffing part
So we're just gonna take our time and work carefully and just kind of go for the best results
So I just used some cotton batting like the little cotton balls to stuff it with
Just you know because I'm I know most of you guys are just shopping at Dollar Tree and stuff and not
Like for batting at at a fabric store or whatever. So this works too. This is great
So just some cotton balls here stuffing it. So just work slowly and if you glue each
Peak of the little tree here separately, then you'll be able to stuff it a little bit easier and get more of a
fuller
Stuffing and just get into those little corners and stuff a little bit easier
so then like once I got about halfway just getting that dowel up to the top of the tree and
Just nice and secured in there with batting on the front of the dowel as well as the back of the dowel
Just so that there's not that stick showing through the fabric like the shape of it
So just taking your time will give you kind of the best results with this I figure
For the gluing that doily down to the quilt batting
I used that clear tacky glue just because I had it
But I feel like you could use the regular tacky glue to it. It actually dries pretty clear as well
So then once I had that all tacked in place, I needed a base for it. So my kids have kind of this random
Old toy bucket and I just had a look in there and there was these two little
Magic cups like from a little magic set that they had
But just look for like anything with a nice shape to it
Like I I like kind of that bell shape that these had to them or if you have any old pieces of like a candlestick
Bottom anything like that would make a great base for for this or even just pieces of wood, too
So I'm just using some
E6000 and a little bit of hot glue to hold it in place while it dries and then I'm just putting it down onto
this pickle jar lid
So while I was doing this project, I actually liked it so much that and then I had the two cups
So I decided to pick up another doily and just make two of them to make a pair
So then I didn't really like how shiny this is, but I do love decorating with silver for Christmas
so I thought I would just tone it down a little bit with this gunmetal folk art paint and
Just a toothbrush. So I'm kind of
Mimicking like a brushed nickel sort of look
Just a really rough finish. I forgot that I didn't take the stamp off of this one as well
So just a little bit of acetone gets that printed
expiration date off the pickle jar lid
So just working horizontal trying to get all your lines as best as you can. It's impossible to get them perfect, but just
Working in the one direction with the toothbrush just to kind of get those brushed
Nickel kind of look to it and I just thought it kind of toned down the shine a little bit
But not dull like you still get that nice sheen to it, but just not the bright shiny plastic look
So here's the finished result for these. I'm super happy with them. I really really love them
I think they would look beautiful stitched as well
so if I make any more in the future, I might do some stitched ones, too, and then we're gonna move on to the
Picture so I was inspired
I thought this little bag at Dollar Tree was so cute with the little Santa on his little bicycle delivering his presents
I just thought it was so sweet. So I cut off the front of this bag. So just taking it apart
Just take your time
I wish I had cut the bottom just a little bit neater because it didn't quite
Line up. I was trying to maximize the picture on this piece of wood that I have here
So, you know like always you just want to take your time and do it as neatly as possible
So I knew that this bare wood and it's just particle board. I knew it was gonna soak up a lot of
Glue, so instead of my Mod Podge. I just used white glue
Just because I knew I would need so much of it and it worked out fine
it looks a little bit wrinkly, of course when it's wet, but then because this was just plain paper like it didn't have a
Shiny finish or anything on it. It dried and just shrunk right back flat and and really good
in the end, so
Like if you do end up working with just the paper bags, they are great for for gluing down a Mod Podging
So then to frame it out. I just have these 3 quarter inch by 3 quarter inch
this is actually for stripping that I cut in half and
Used to be really cheap at Home Depot, of course now all wood is expensive
But I think even these would still be affordable. It's a great option for framing if not just use your
Tumbling tower blocks or just however you like to frame out your signs. I just love this method
I just find it really easy and cheap and affordable. So
Then just add a little bit more
Dimension and and kind of textures and stuff to this picture. I just thought I would use those sweet little
Cardboard fences that Robin sent me as well. So I just wanted them to look a little bit
Textured and rough like they've been outside for a while. So I went in with some off-white paint to start with and
Just did like a rough coat. I just love these children's brushes from Dollar Tree
They're so great for getting that nice streaky finish on things
And then I just dry brush some white on top of the off-white and I thought it gave it a lot of texture and dimension
So then I'm gonna use some of that snowy paint that fluffy snowy paint that we made
Just to look like snow is sitting on this fence
I tried using this iridescent snow that I had just in a bag kicking around and it was crazy
I couldn't control it at all. That's what that other fence is there
So originally I was planning to use like a whole fence right across the bottom of the picture
But I ended up just using this one and then once the snow
Once I had it all on there that snowy paint. I just sprinkled a little bit of that white
Sparkly glitter just to kind of give it that glistening snow look and then we'll get that glued down to the bottom of the picture
So the bottom of this bag
This is what I meant by I didn't cut it quite as neatly as I should have and it didn't quite line up at the bottom
So to camouflage that I'm just gonna put in some more of that white
Sparkly glitter to kind of hide my little mistake there
Gotta love glitter right and it hides all our little mistakes
Especially at Christmas, I love glitter at Christmas
so then I'm gonna use some of those foam sticker letters that Robin sent me as well and
They're super sticky. I have old ones and they've lost all their stickiness
So the glue on these is much better and I stuck them down to some old sticker sheets that I had
just so it'd be nice and
Slippery like to peel them off again. And then because they're all funky colors
I just gave them a coat of this primer and paint all-in-one and it actually took two coats still even though this has pretty good coverage
So two coats of that got a nice base coat on there and then I decided to give it kind of a frosted look
So I'm just using a baby wipe and some white paint and just kind of padding
some white
Models kind of looking paint onto it and it just kind of gives it this frosty look
And then I also wanted to give these the little snowy
Kind of texture looking like snow is sitting on them
So anywhere where the snow would fall on the tops of the letters
I just went in with some glue and then again just some of that white sparkly
glitter
Now for taking these off of this paper. I wish I had to let them dry so long
If you kind of do this like all in one day, then they peel off a lot easier
But I let them dry for a couple days and the paint got a little bit crunchy on me
But just as a tip if you do that whole project just in the one day then they will come off easier
So then I just have some of this pink scrapbook paper just from my stash. I
Think it it was from quite a while ago. So I don't know if you'd find this exact one, but just something
like similar anything
Pink and pretty I thought it looked nice. So
I'm just gonna go through and put this little saying on here. My husband helped me come up with this little saying
I was trying to think of something cute to write with the Santa on his bike
And so he helped me think of oh what fun it is to ride and then just getting these all stuck down
So this is what I was talking about. Just the paint got a little bit too dry
Normally, it will pull off of these letters a little bit easier
I've painted lots of these foam letters in the past
So just know that if you kind of do it all in one day, you'll have better luck getting the paint to detach from
sticker paper
So then just splitting them all up and then I'm gonna use these letters
Like one just because I thought it would look pretty and then two they'll cover the little holes that are in the bag
So where the handle of the bag was and then I thought as a little added detail
I would use these little tiny mini clothes
pins
that's what you call them right clothes pins to
Just make it look like they're all kind of hanging on the little clothesline
So same thing with those I just used a little bit of burnt umber and a little
I don't know if I used to touch a black in that one
But just the burnt umber gives a nice stain to that dries super quick
So just watered down burnt umber acrylic paint. So then for the letters, I just got them spaced out as nicely as I could
Just did a little dab of hot glue on the bottom of each of the letters
Just so that I could still lift the top up to put the little clothes pin on it and
Then just pull the strings tight and I actually just used the little
The little groove of where the frame is meeting the picture to wedge the little twine in that I used
So you'll see here in just a moment
so I just cut them off left a little bit of extra and
Put some little a little dab of tacky glue down there and then use that little
Faux Cricut spatula thing to just kind of tuck them down into that groove
Just to kind of give it a nice finished look
And so here's the picture all done you guys I had so much fun with this mystery box challenge
It was such fun to be a part of and it just brought me so much joy
So just thank you so much to Aaliyah from Junker Necker DIY and to my best buddy
Fabi from arrows DIY for organizing this and to Robin again for sending me that wonderful
Package that was so fun. So just as a last added detail. I
Had found this funky little tree
last year at the end of Christmas like when they clear out all the stuff from the thrift store and
Like everything was like 75% off
So I think I paid like a dollar or something for this tree
And I just thought I could kind of give this that snowy effect to you and just make it look a little bit cuter
so just going in with the rest of that snowy paint and getting the
Branches all frosted and snowy and then I thought this would be cute to put those little
Those sweet little truck lights that she sent me on
So I just thought that was nice and fun and kind of brought everything together
So I really hope you guys will check out all my friends and their videos
