🎬 Dmitri Hvorostovsky — Ombra mai fu (Handel: Serse) | Cardiff 1989

🎼 George Frideric Handel — Serse (Xerxes)
📍 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition | 16 June 1989

One voice. One moment. Before the legend was fully born.

In this early career performance from the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 1989 competition, a young Dmitri Hvorostovsky delivers a hauntingly beautiful interpretation of “Ombra mai fu” — one of Handel’s most serene and iconic arias.

Rather than drama or power, the piece requires something far more difficult: stillness, purity, and absolute control of tone.

With his unmistakable velvety baritone, noble phrasing, and effortless legato, Hvorostovsky turns the aria into a moment of pure reflection—almost like time itself pauses.

This performance became part of the foundation of his breakthrough year, when he would go on to win the competition and launch an international career that made him one of the greatest baritones of his generation.

A glimpse of greatness—already fully present in 1989.
