In recent years, the Chinese Communist Party has increased its arms sales abroad,
with a low-price strategy. But the quality has now come into question.
Recently, it was reported that almost all Chinese-made military aircraft were abandoned
by the Burma Air Force due to technical failures. Burma is also known as Myanmar.
On November 25th, Burma's independent media outlet Irrawaddy News Network reported that
most of the JF-17 fighter jets, jointly purchased by China and Pakistan in 2018,
were abandoned and grounded. The reason? According to the report,
the complex design of the weapons control systems, Western sanctions over the procurement
of components and bombs, and poor radar accuracy caused the problems.
Burma's military signed a contract with the CCP in 2016 to buy 16 JF-17 fighter jets at a price
of $25 million each. And the first six were delivered in 2018. But details of the other
10 were not disclosed. Burma thus became the first country JF-17 fighters. It was also clarified that
although the jet was in service with the Air Force for four years, it didn't actually see
any combat. The network said that the Burmese middlemen involved in the fighter jet transaction
earned millions of dollars. In addition, the integrity of the Burmese military's
logistical maintenance guarantee for the fighter jets is being called into question.
According to Radio Free Asia, the news quickly attracted a large number of retweets
in international media and caused a wave of criticism for the quality of the CCP's weapons.
The CCP made no statement on the matter. Yifan Chen, assistant professor at the
Department of Diplomacy and International Relations at Tamkang University in Taiwan,
believes that Beijing is still a small player in the international arms sales market.
And in addition to Pakistan and Burma, it seems that Argentina is considering buying
Chinese aircraft because of the low price. According to local media in Argentina,
in September, the country's government cabinet announced that it had received a budget of $684
million, which will be used to purchase new multipurpose fighter jets. Opposition parties
warned that the aircraft purchased must be guaranteed to be of super high quality so as
not to expose pilots to accidents. For example, Nazareno Echepare, a well-known lawyer and
columnist for Pedfield.com, said on his Twitter feed that Argentina should buy high-quality,
US-made F-16 fighter jets, not Chinese JF-17 fighter jets. He also questioned the safety of
China's 5G technology. On the other hand, China's CCTV reported that Iraq's defense
minister confirmed in late January that the planned purchase of US F-16 fighter jets was
changed to the purchase of 12 Chinese JF-17 fighters. But there is still no new information
on the procurement. Historical data shows that the JF-17 was signed by the Pakistan Air Force
and the China National Aviation Technology Import and Export Corporation in 1999. At the moment,
whether the Chinese aircraft designs are absolutely flawed cannot be confirmed. But
what can be said is that there is already a lot of doubt about the quality. What do you think?
