Why is China being hit by so many disasters at once? Katherine Hu examines the floods, repeated earthquakes, renewed COVID surge, and mounting pressure surrounding the Three Gorges Dam in the summer of 2026.
On August 7, ferocious winds and record-breaking rainfall swept through Beijing, turning roads into rivers and bringing parts of the capital to a standstill.
That same day, a magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck Yibin, Sichuan—following dozens of tremors across the region in recent weeks. For a province that still carries the trauma of the devastating 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, the growing seismic activity has raised an urgent question: could these repeated tremors be warning signs of something larger?
But the greatest concern may lie farther downstream.
As torrential rain moved toward the Three Gorges Reservoir system, the dam began releasing floodwater through thirteen spillway outlets. Towns were inundated, vehicles and factories were swept away, and critical transportation infrastructure was damaged.
This investigation also examines claims attributed to a senior figure connected to China Three Gorges Corporation, as well as reported internal scenario maps projecting what could happen if the dam were ever to fail. According to those disclosed projections, as many as 132 million people could be affected within the first week alone. These claims and projections have not been independently verified and are presented as reported source material—not as a prediction that a dam failure will occur.
At the same time, China CDC data shows that the country’s COVID-19 test positivity rate rose from 2.9 percent in early June to 20.3 percent by late July, while videos and witness accounts suggest growing pressure on hospitals in several regions.
Floods. Earthquakes. Public-health pressure. And unanswered questions surrounding the world’s largest water-control project.
Is China simply facing an extraordinary convergence of natural disasters—or is the summer of 2026 exposing vulnerabilities that Beijing has spent years trying to conceal?

This is Beijing, disappearing beneath raging floodwaters.
This is Sichuan, shaken by wave after wave of powerful earthquakes.
This is the Three Gorges Dam, teetering on the brink of collapse.
This is China, as COVID surges back with alarming speed.
This August, disaster after disaster is engulfing China.
And now, a catastrophe on a scale far beyond anything we have ever imagined
is unfolding across the country.
Welcome back to Final War with Catherine Hu.
On August 7th, 2026, the day traditionally marking the beginning of autumn in the Chinese calendar,
ferocious winds and torrential rain suddenly tore through central Beijing.
Though hundreds of miles from the sea,
the capital looked like a coastal city being battered by a massive hurricane.
This was no ordinary downpour.
Beijing registered the highest hourly rainfall in the country,
a record-breaking deluge of extraordinary intensity.
Howling winds roared through the city.
Dark clouds churned overhead.
Then the rain came crashing down.
One building after another vanished behind a blinding wall of rain.
Streets disappeared beneath the floodwaters,
leaving drivers unable even to make out the road ahead.
Entire rows of trees were torn up by the roots.
Windows shattered.
Cars and pedestrians were trapped in the rising water.
Roads turned into rivers, bringing traffic across Beijing to a complete standstill.
By the time the storm had passed,
parts of the capital were almost unrecognizable,
as if a major disaster had swept through the city.
And yet, this astonishing storm in Beijing may be only the opening act
in a far greater wave of disasters now unfolding across China.
Also on August 7, 2026,
a magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck Yibin City in southern Sichuan,
one of China's most strategically important provinces.
With its epicenter only six kilometers below the surface,
the quake produced intense shaking.
The ground heaved violently,
and powerful tremors were felt across the surrounding region.
Many aging residential buildings,
already weakened by poor construction,
were left with enormous cracks.
Some partially collapsed,
leaving the homes completely uninhabitable.
Then after the earthquake,
something even more unsettling happened.
A local river,
once so clear that its riverbed could be seen,
suddenly turned red.
Deepening the fear already spreading through the area.
The real problem is that these earthquakes are no longer isolated incidents.
They are becoming a terrifying pattern.
Just four days earlier,
on August 3,
Yibin was hit by four earthquakes in a single night.
Throughout July, the city was shaken dozens of times.
On one day alone,
it endured a staggering 13 earthquakes.
Tremor after tremor has pushed residents to the breaking point.
And now,
one terrifying question is spreading across the region.
Are these relentless earthquakes building toward a devastating major quake?
There is nowhere to run.
Nowhere to hide.
People are living with the constant fear that,
at any moment,
the ground beneath them could open up and swallow everything.
The earthquakes are not confined to Yibin.
In recent weeks,
clearly felt tremors have continued to strike across Sichuan,
including Chengdu, the provincial capital.
And this is a province that still carries the trauma of May 12, 2008.
the Wenchuan earthquake shocked the world,
devastating an area of more than 100,000 square kilometers
and reached level 11 on China's 12-level seismic intensity scale,
just one level below the maximum.
According to official figures,
nearly 70,000 people were killed.
Almost 18,000 were reported missing.
Nearly 380,000 were injured.
In all, more than 46.25 million people were affected.
I repeatedly traveled deep into the disaster zone as a filmmaker.
What I witnessed was truly devastating.
The earth split open,
mountains collapsed,
and rescue teams faced challenges on an unprecedented scale.
Based on what I saw firsthand,
I have every reason to believe that the true death toll was far higher than the official figure.
Now, as earthquakes strike Sichuan,
with alarming frequency in the summer of 2026,
a far more destructive quake may already be building beneath the surface.
If it comes,
the consequences could be beyond imagination.
For the Chinese people,
an even greater danger is unfolding in Hubei province.
Also in central China,
the Three Gorges Dam is now under mounting strain.
The Three Gorges Dam is the largest water control project in the world.
Its reservoir holds tens of billions of cubic meters of water.
Whenever torrential rains arrive and the Yangtze River rises,
the dam becomes a sword hanging over countless cities downstream,
and more than 100 million people.
And now, at this critical moment,
a catastrophic rainstorm of a scale rarely seen in decades
is closing in on the very heart of the Three Gorges Dam system.
In the early hours of August 5th,
Yichang City was battered by its most intense round of extreme rainfall this year.
The center of the storm was positioned almost directly at the gateway
to the Three Gorges Reservoir.
This sudden flash flooding plunged the region into an immediate crisis.
Beginning on August 4th,
the Three Gorges Dam began releasing floodwater through 13 spillway outlets.
As torrential rain continued to pour down
and massive volumes of water were released from the dam,
powerful torrents surged downstream.
One city after another was rapidly engulfed.
Entire towns disappeared beneath the floodwaters.
Factories and vehicles were swept away.
Even expressways and bridges were torn apart by the raging water.
The potential human toll linked to the release of floodwater from the Three Gorges Dam
is simply impossible to calculate.
All we can do now is pray that the people living downstream
make it safely through this disaster.
Just two weeks ago, a senior figure within China Three Gorges Corporation,
Mr. Wu,
risked his life to reveal alarming conditions at the Three Gorges Dam.
Soon afterward, he was taken away and placed under investigation
for alleged serious violations of discipline and law.
The timing made it difficult not to question
According to the internal information disclosed by Wu,
the Three Gorges Dam is in an extremely dangerous condition,
with water reportedly seeping through multiple areas near its base.
His warning was chilling.
The collapse of the Three Gorges Dam is only a matter of time.
If the dam were to fail, the consequences would be catastrophic.
On an almost apocalyptic scale.
The relevant authorities conducted detailed analyses
of a potential Three Gorges Dam collapse long ago.
The reports ran to hundreds of pages.
They examined what would happen after 72 hours,
one week, three months, and six months.
The data was extremely detailed.
As someone with internal access, I captured some of the material.
According to the dam collapse scenario maps disclosed with the internal material,
approximately 132 million people would be affected within the first week alone.
Of those, roughly 63.2 million would face severe flooding,
with water depths exceeding two meters.
Another 48.6 million would be affected
by floodwaters between half a meter and two meters deep.
Approximately 16 million more would experience flooding below half a meter.
A separate map showing projected transportation disruptions
after one week paints an equally devastating picture.
Approximately 7,428 kilometers of expressways,
9,865 kilometers of national and provincial highways,
and 2,318 kilometers of railway lines would be completely cut off.
Another 156 bridges would become impassable.
In addition, 18 airports and 27 ports would be affected.
Taken together, these figures suggest that the transportation network
across the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River
would be brought to an almost complete standstill.
This may be precisely the truth the Chinese communist regime
most fears its own people will discover.
Even more troubling is the return of COVID-19 across mainland China.
According to surveillance data released by the Chinese Center
for Disease Control and Prevention, China CDC,
on July 30th, the COVID-19 test positivity rate exceeded 20% for the first time.
It rose steadily from 2.9% in the week of June 1st
to 20.3% in the week of July 26th.
The dominant strain remains the NB.1.8.1 lineage.
Test positivity is significantly higher in southern China than in the north,
with the highest rate recorded among cases involving people between the ages of 15 and 59.
Officials have acknowledged that the virus has become more transmissible
while classifying the current outbreak as being at a moderate epidemic level.
But doctors and members of the public describe a very different reality.
Outpatient clinics and emergency rooms have already been overwhelmed,
suggesting that infections are quietly surging out of public view.
Videos circulating online appear to show major hospitals across China packed with patients.
Inpatient beds are reportedly so scarce that additional beds have been placed in hospital
corridors. Reports of sudden deaths among young and middle-aged adults are also increasing.
Because Beijing has long interfered administratively with pandemic data,
the outside world has no reliable way to know the true severity of the outbreak.
From extreme rainfall to tremors deep beneath the earth,
and the hidden dangers surrounding the Three Gorges Dam,
reality is sending a cold and brutal message.
The CCP's arrogant belief that humanity can conquer nature is falling apart.
In traditional Chinese culture, natural disasters are never seen as mere coincidence.
They are seen as a stern warning from heaven to rulers who have lost their moral legitimacy.
Look at China today, battered by a relentless wave of devastating disasters,
with its people living in fear.
And yet, those in power seem to care only about who will occupy the throne in Zhongnanhai.
