What Is Behind China’s Deadly Takeout Panic?

China is now in a state of total chaos. A victim who had lost money in the collapse of Henan's rural banks was reportedly seeking revenge against society. While delivering food, the person allegedly used a syringe to inject poison into thousands of takeout drinks. Then, only two days later, another disturbing account surfaced online. This one reportedly came from a doctor at one of China's top-tier hospitals. According to the whistleblower, the number of patients poisoned by paraquat, a highly toxic herbicide, had suddenly surged over the past year. But instead of warning the public, the hospital had reportedly ordered its staff to remain silent, fearing that the truth could set off widespread panic. These reports point to something much larger and far more frightening. Across China, people at the bottom of society are being pushed to the point where they see no way out. And more and more, they are turning their desperation and rage against one another. What we are seeing is only the tip of the iceberg. Paraquat is a fast-acting herbicide, and it is extraordinarily toxic. There is no specific antidote. Swallowing even 5-15 ml can be fatal. Once inside the body, it attacks the lungs, causing progressive lung damage and eventually respiratory failure. So how did something this deadly come to be used against complete strangers? The answer takes us back to 2022. In April 2022, four rural banks in Henan province, one of China's most populous provinces, shut down online withdrawals and transfers almost simultaneously, without any warning. Panic quickly spread among depositors. The scandal involved tens of billions of yuan in deposits, equivalent to billions of US dollars, and affected roughly 400,000 depositors. After repeated protests, depositors from Henan province eventually got all their money back. But the deposits of nearly 1,000 people from outside the province were unlawfully frozen. They were not allowed to withdraw a single yuan. For nearly four years, many of these depositors have traveled to Henan again and again, demanding their money back. Instead, they have been detained in secret facilities known as black jails, and subjected to beatings, verbal abuse, intimidation, threats, slander, fraud and sexual harassment. Some have even been sent to prison. The victims have called the police thousands of times. No one has stepped in. With their cases still denied a fair resolution, the victims from other provinces formed a group chat called Get Our Money Back. The whistleblower who exposed the poisoning allegation was himself one of the victims in that group. According to his account, another victim in the group had fallen on hard times and eventually turned to food delivery to make a living. While making deliveries, the man laced food and milk tea with poison before handing the orders to thousands of customers. He also recorded what he was doing and posted the videos in the group, urging hundreds of other victims to follow his lead. Another post circulating online featured photos reportedly taken by a delivery driver on August 23rd. The driver said he had injected Paraquat into 57 drinks he was delivering, inserting a fine needle through the edge of each seal. He limited the amount to 0.1ml per drink, fearing that any more would cause immediate death. The reaction online I strongly condemn this. Putting other people's lives and health at risk simply to vent your rage is utterly vile and terrifying. The strong draw their blades against those even stronger. Cowards turn theirs on the weak, the elderly, and children. This is fundamentally no different from deliberately driving into random people. Both target the innocent. Innocent customers should never have to pay the price for someone else's misfortune. No matter what hardship you face, you can never cross the line and harm innocent people. Under China's vast surveillance and power system, the people truly responsible are beyond the reach of the powerless. Going after officials carries an unbearable cost. Attacking innocent strangers does not. It has become the easiest way for desperate people to vent their rage. In a society ruled by the CCP, everyone ends up harming everyone else. This incident has simply brought that hidden rule out into the open. Once the Paraquat poisoning allegations came to light, more accounts began to surface online. I work at one of China's top-tier hospitals, and there is something I have to speak out about. Over the past year, the number of patients admitted with Paraquat poisoning has suddenly skyrocketed. We used to see only a few cases in an entire year. But this year, more than 4,000 have died, and over 10,000 have become critically ill. Most of these cases occurred after the patients ordered food delivery. This has to be deliberate, but we have no authority to investigate. The hospital has ordered us not to talk about it. We cannot discuss the cases or compare patient numbers with other hospitals. We are told that it has already been reported to higher authorities. Maybe they are afraid it will cause panic and lead others to do the same. The police keep coming, wave after wave, and we keep cooperating, time after time. But they are just going through the motions. There is no funding and no real desire to investigate. We have become numb to it. Everything is falling apart. Although we cannot verify the exact figures in this account, the way people are responding offers a clue. These poisoning incidents may already be widespread enough to have caused public panic. For example, people ordering food delivery are now finding warning notes like this attached to their bags. 1. Turn the milk tea upside down and squeeze the cup. Check whether any liquid leaks out. 2. Check the seal and the rim of the lid for tiny holes. 3. Check for any unusual smell. 4. Check whether the drink has a bluish-green tint. If you notice any of these signs, do not drink it. Amid this wave of panic, a video emerged showing a young woman crying as she drank a bottle of Paraquat. It was the last video ever recorded of her. The truth is, Chinese people poisoning one another is nothing new. In recent days, another scandal has surfaced alongside the Paraquat report, the so-called toxic cabbage case. A newly circulated video reportedly came from China's largest cabbage-growing region in Hebei province. The footage shows buyers dipping the root of every cabbage into a formaldehyde solution before loading them onto trucks for long-distance transport, all to keep them fresh longer. Not a single cabbage is spared. Some unscrupulous sellers even spray the solution directly onto the cabbages. Even more frightening, formaldehyde is what we commonly know as formalin, and the World Health Organization classifies it as a known cause of cancer in humans. If swallowed in large amounts, it can cause acute poisoning. Severe cases can lead to abdominal pain, vomiting, coma, kidney damage, and even death. On August 22, the local government issued an official statement in response to online reports that cabbage buyers had been dipping cabbages in a formaldehyde solution. A preliminary investigation confirmed that what the video showed was true. The buyers had broken the law by using the chemical while loading the cabbages to keep them fresh during transport.
