Chemistry in the Natural Aquarium

Chemistry in the Natural Aquarium reveals what is really happening beneath the sand in a natural aquarium substrate. Father Fish explains how a deep sand cap, soil, beneficial microorganisms, minerals, and aquatic plant roots work together to create a biologically active environment. Learn why a 2-inch sand cap is important, how an anaerobic substrate makes nutrients available to aquarium plants, and how iron, manganese, calcium, magnesium, phosphates, carbonates, biochar, clay, and other elements behave below the substrate surface. The natural aquarium method keeps essential nutrients concentrated in the root zone while limiting their movement into the water column.

The substrate beneath a natural aquarium is far from inactive. Father Fish explores the biochemical processes occurring underground, including how microorganisms transform nutrients and how plant roots interact with trace minerals. He explains why aquatic soil behaves differently from ordinary garden soil, why newly planted roots should remain primarily within the sand layer, and how the substrate gradually develops into a stable environment capable of supporting healthy plant growth.

You’ll also learn how the natural aquarium substrate helps control potentially troublesome compounds. Father Fish discusses phosphate binding, ammonium, carbonate buffering, substrate pH, and the prevention of toxic hydrogen sulfide. The result is a fascinating look beneath the surface at the chemistry, biology, and microbiology that allow a mature natural aquarium to function as a living ecosystem.

Lou Foxwell, known as Father Fish, is a pioneer of natural aquarium keeping and the creator of the Father Fish Method.

His approach to planted aquariums focuses on building balanced, self-sustaining ecosystems using soil substrates, natural processes, and minimal maintenance. The Father Fish Method draws inspiration from the Walstad Method and the natural aquarium philosophy of Takashi Amano.

Before entering the aquarium industry, Lou spent 25 years as a missionary, serving a congregation of deaf worshipers. He later opened a tropical fish store, where he adopted the role of Father Fish.

His passion for fishkeeping began in childhood, inspired by his grandmother from Berlin, Germany. He went on to become a founder and original board member of the National Aquarium, where he helped shape its early development and leadership.

With decades of experience across the fishkeeping world, Father Fish shares practical knowledge on planted aquariums, dirt substrate systems, and natural ecosystem balance. He also provides plants, soil supplements, and tools to help hobbyists create thriving aquariums with less effort and fewer water changes.
