A barcarolle (a term derived from French; *barcarola* or *barcarole* in Italian) is a folk song traditionally sung by Venetian gondoliers, or a musical composition written in that style.
In classical music, the two most famous barcarolles are "Belle nuit, ô nuit d’amour" from Jacques Offenbach’s opera *Les Contes d’Hoffmann* (The Tales of Hoffmann) and Frédéric Chopin’s Barcarolle in F-sharp major, Op. 60, for solo piano.
A fundamental characteristic of the barcarolle is a rhythm that evokes the stroke of a gondolier's oar, typically set to a moderate tempo in 6/8 time. While the most famous examples date from the Romantic era, the genre first gained recognition in the 18th century; the English musicologist Charles Burney (1726–1814) noted in *The Present State of Music in France and Italy* (1771) that it was a popular genre favored by "musical connoisseurs."
It became a common form in Romantic opera, where the sentimental yet artless style of folk song could be effectively employed; in addition to Offenbach’s example, composers such as Paisiello, Weber, and Rossini wrote arias in the barcarolle style. Gaetano Donizetti evoked the setting of Venice in the opening of *Marino Faliero* (1835) with a barcarolle for gondolier and chorus, while Verdi included a barcarolle in *Un Ballo in Maschera*—specifically Riccardo’s atmospheric Act I aria, "Di’ tu se fedele il flutto m’aspetta." While Schubert did not explicitly use the genre name, he employed a style evocative of the barcarolle in some of his most famous *Lieder*, notably *Auf dem Wasser zu singen* ("To Sing on the Water"), D. 774, and *Des Fischers Liebesglück*, D. 933.
Schubert also arranged Mayrhofer’s *Der Gondelfahrer* for both solo voice and a male vocal quartet; both versions are quintessential barcarolles of great lyrical beauty.
In addition to the Barcarolle, Op. 60, Chopin composed *Souvenir de Paganini* (1829)—an A-major barcarolle based on the famous theme from *Le carnaval de Venise* (The Carnival of Venice)—and a set of variations in C major for piano duet based on the same theme.
Felix Mendelssohn included three pieces titled *Venetianisches Gondellied* (Venetian Gondolier's Song) in his *Lieder ohne Worte* (Songs Without Words): Op. 19, No. 6 (G minor); Op. 30, No. 6 (F-sharp minor); and Op. 62, No. 5 (A minor)—he actually composed the first of these in Venice. He also wrote a standalone *Gondellied* (Barcarolle) in A major in 1837.
Other notable barcarolles include the "June" barcarolle from Tchaikovsky’s *The Seasons*; the barcarolle from Béla Bartók’s *Out of Doors*; *Julia Florida* by guitarist Agustín Barrios; works by Anton Rubinstein, Mily Balakirev, Alexander Glazunov, Edward MacDowell, and Ethelbert Nevin; and, most substantial of all, the set of thirteen barcarolles for solo piano by Gabriel Fauré, composed between 1880 and 1921. Fauré also composed a *mélodie* titled *Barcarolle* (Op. 7, No. 3, 1873).
