Good and thank you all so very much for
Making Time on your Saturday to Here for
this presentation I' ve been Looking for
to play Here for like Year
like
than anden For such a Wonderful
Opportunity presentation UM is meant to
align with the current exhibition on
Maze And you wouldn't Think initially
that The Guitar and Maze would have a
lot in common But There are some
interesting parallels that kind of
revolve around the BR Idea appr and
Movement crs musical Instruments and
ideas Back and forth between the New
World and the Old World and It All kind
begins at The Same Time In
Spain It is Around 1494 that Columbus
Returns From his Second Voyage to the
New World and he brings Ma with Him Back
to Spain and When Ma arrives In Spain
they really don't know What to do with
it Because it's not really like any of the
other crops that have in SP they TR
to rel it to things like meat or S But
It's really quite removed and so it
mostly remains
an For The Next 100 Plus years for it
really gains A
Foo But It is Around that Same Time that
We begin to see references to a new
musical instrument on the span landscape
and that would be The First Guitar
identified As
lait Time And would have looked like
this instrument Right Here This is a
Renaissance Guitar and Example of What
the very First guitars Look Like It is a
Guitar visually in the Sense that has The
Figure E shaped Body But More
importantly The Strings are tuned To The
Same intervals
asar so thats likeit
[music]
in otherwise
differences that
aum with a Total of Seven
Strings and the Two highest Strings are
actually on the
Outside of the string
lay The First Music published for this
instrument was published in
156
in and For You Two these very First
pieces So You can get an Idea of What
This instrument sounded like and What
the music Written for it sed Like First
Piece is a p which a moderate Tempo
Dance and The Second Piece is identified
As vac and it would have been A well in
SP As it uses A familiar progr that
shows Up mus

so This instrument spreads quite quickly
across southern Europe Up into England
and even arrives in New World Is Around
1570 we have a reference to a Guitar
being played in
Augustine colony in
flor Making that sold Who Guitar
america's
and later on pese migrants and
SA Hawaii arrived with This instrument
and the Hawaiians really like it and
they rename
it or whichever you
prefer showing kind of that
Connection that is Pretty obvious
seeing But As
thea Comes to End
Trans into a new instrument and Comes
As of changing musical
Styles in This Next period which We call
the baro period instrumental music
becomes Far More significant and a lot
of Instruments Take on New
characteristics The Guitar being No
Exception so The Guitar becomes big and
it an added fifth course of Strings and
This version of the Guitar
on to become wildly popular across
southern Europe Spain And throughout The
New World As Mirroring popularity of the
Guitar as we know it today in fact the
earliest surviving music we have
From The New World com from a colony In
Spain
Around
1670 and that Music was Guitar
Music later Right After that Out Of per
As well so The Guitar was being used
throughout New
on It is also Around that Time Around
1670
that establishes itself In Spain As A
staple crop especially in the southern
regions of Spain not The andalan region
which is even Now A cer for agriculture
In Spain and We know that
Spain consume corn
outbreaks of which is a nutrien that
Comes EA Way Too Much
corn The issue being that This is
unprocessed corn and that When Spain
brought corn Over they did not Bring the
Processing Method that was used for
thousands of years in native American
populations Speaking of the
process soak
skas But in any Case Moving on to music
In 1674 The First Solo Music is
published for this instrument In
Spain composer gaspar s S is a well
composer For The instrument Because
often on the
Modern But He was well known during his
Life As well As A guitarist and composer
so My Next Set Will Be a Series of
Spanish dances All by
gaspar I will not be Taking a lot of
breaks in between pieces Very Very
Minimal trying to continue the music as
we Think This is How they would have been
heard at the time in an effort to
Keep everyone on the danc
