✨ 8 card ideas using one simple shape – hexagons!

Hi it's Lucy here and I had so much fun putting these together because I love hexagons and hopefully if you don't already you will by the end of this video. These are the cards I'll be creating today and I'm using the new Uniquely Creative papers for these and the timing is actually perfect because they've brought their sale forward this weekend. And for the shapes I'm using a couple of hexagon punches in different sizes. I've had these for a long time but if you've got hexagon dies as well they'll work just as well. And as we go I'll share a few different ideas for changing up the look of your hexagon so each card feels a little bit different even though we're using the same basic shape. Alright are you ready to get started? First off I'm just going to punch out a lot of hexagons with this paper and it doesn't matter if they're not full hexagons because I can always use them as side ones where they're coming off the card anyway. So I do pop them to the side rather than just put the whole piece of scrap paper in the bin. Papers with a lot of variety in them are perfect for this because every hexagon you punch out is going to look a little bit different which makes the finished cards feel much more interesting. I'm just punching a whole bunch of hexagons from one 12 by 12 sheet and a few larger scraps. Nothing too planned here I'm just building up a mix of hexagons to work with and this is where using papers from the same collection really helps because you know everything is going to coordinate beautifully without having to think too hard about it or go in your stash looking for different papers that will coordinate well. And if you're only making a couple of cards you could easily just work from one 12 by 12 sheet you'll still get plenty of variety from that without needing to pull in lots of different papers. And next I'm choosing a few papers to create my backgrounds and cover the card fronts completely. For me the quickest way to do this is to use a rectangle die that's the same size as the card front it just gives a really nice clean finish and I'll add a few strips of double-sided tape to the back and then just peel off one or two pieces to start with. I like to leave the left side covered so I can line it up nicely against the fold of the card without it grabbing straight away. Once I'm happy with the position I'll press those down and then remove the rest of the backing. And next I'm punching out some hexagons from white cardstock these are going to sit underneath to give a bit of extra thickness and dimension on some of the cards. And for this first one I'm keeping it nice and simple and adding two white layers underneath each hexagon. I'm using both sizes here of the hexagons and I'll just place them onto the card and move them around a little until it feels right before sticking anything down. And once they're glued I'll pop my heavy acrylic block on top just to hold everything flat while it dries so nothing warps. To finish it off I'm adding a floral ephemera piece and a sentiment and these sentiments are from one of the new Spellbinders sets. They've got the main word and a shadow layer which gives a really nice finished look and I'll have them linked below if you want to take a closer look at those. And for a bit of extra detail I'm adding some pink nouveau drops and then I'll go around the hexagons with a white gel pen. I like to keep it a little bit scribbly so it feels relaxed but you could definitely use a ruler if you prefer a cleaner line. And I'll also add a quick white border around the edge of the card as well and that's this one finished. Really simple and it comes together so quickly. For this next one I've already added a special white cardstock to the background. It's got a really subtle sheen to it which just gives the card a little something extra without being too much. And again I'm adding two white layers underneath each of the hexagons and this really helps them stand out more against the card background. It gives them more of a tiled look almost like a more of an embellishment rather than just pieces of paper. And this time I'm going around the edges with some brown ink. I'm using distress oxide ink in frayed burlap color just to add a bit of warmth and definition. And just in case you're in Australia and don't know this yet Uniquely Creative now sell the distress oxide inks and lots of the mini sets of four which is really handy if you don't use inks very often. And for the layout of this card I'm running the hexagons diagonally across the card with one larger hexagon in the center and the smaller ones on either side. And using glue rather than adhesive tape gives us a more wiggle room so we can line everything up nicely before it sets. I'll finish this one off with a few embellishments. I had to add the bird I love it and I know a lot of you do too because you mentioned that last time I used birds on a card. I've also added some pink nouveau drops just to tie everything together. I really love the clean white background with busy hexagons it works so nicely together. I always love hearing which cards are your favorites and if you got any new ideas from my videos. Okay let's get on to the next idea. And for this next card I'm just adding one white layer underneath the hexagons and this time I'm using only the larger ones to cover the card front leaving a little gap in between each one. Another nice way to help the hexagons stand out against a busier background is to add a bit of distressing. I'm using a distress tool here but if you don't have one you can absolutely use the edge of your scissors to get a similar look. And I'll glue some of the hexagons slightly over the edge of the card and then just trim off the excess. It's a really easy way to get a nice clean finish. And to help the edges blend in with the rest of the card I'm just going to rub them with some rough sandpaper and it gives them almost the same look there. I'll share a different way of using sandpaper on the edges shortly and it might be my favorite technique of the day. Okay so I'm keeping the embellishing really simple again just some ephemera and one of their die-cut sentiments. Nothing really extra. I'm adding some nouveau drops as well again and then this card is also finished. For this next card I've already added the smaller hexagons across the card front and again I'll just trim off any overhanging pieces. I'm using the white gel pen again but this time instead of scribbling inside the edges I'm just marking along the edges of each hexagon to highlight the shape a bit more. These gel pens come in three nib sizes in one pack and I mostly always use the largest nib which is a size 10. It's hard to find good white markers. I've tried so many in the past but now I pretty much only use these ones so I'll link the pack below. It's an American store and they also sell uniquely creative products including the ephemera florals I'm using today. And if you don't have a white gel pen you could use white ink instead or even use white embossing powder would give the same effect. I've added some ephemera and a sentiment to finish this one off and I do like the busy look of it. What do you think? For this one I've already added the hexagons to the card front and gone back to that scribbly white gel pen detail inside each shape. I didn't use any of the floral hexagons on this card just textured colors and I've left a couple of areas open because I knew I wanted to feature this larger butterfly and giving it a bit of space really helps the wings stand out nicely. I think this is a really lovely sympathy card. The sentiment is just beautiful isn't it? I think the soft gold sentiment really goes well with the butterfly wings. And here's another way to add a bit of interest to your hexagons. You can use a sandpaper block or even just regular sandpaper from the hardware store and gently go around the edges. It gives a much softer look than distressing almost like the shapes have always been that way. You can see the difference between the two hexagons here. It is a little bit harder on the hands but I do love the finish that it gives. And to add some dimension I'll gently shape the bow and the butterfly by curling them around something round and then place them into the center of the card. And when I'm adding ephemera like this I'll often use foam tape underneath so it lifts everything slightly off the card. If you've got different thicknesses of foam tape it's nice to mix them in to create a bit of variation in height. It just adds more interest and layering. And if you don't want as much dimension you can always just add a couple of layers of scrap cardstock underneath instead for a more subtle lift. And this is a great way to get rid of scraps. Another fun way to use your hexagons is to punch them directly from the background paper and then pop them back up with a little bit of foam tape. With punches you are a bit limited with placement because you can only reach so far into the paper so they tend to sit closer to the edges. If you're using hexagon dies though you can cut them from anywhere which gives you a lot more flexibility. I do actually have some lovely stitched hexagon dies from Uniquely Creative that would have worked beautifully for this. I'm just inking around the edges of each hexagon to help them stand out slightly and I'm only using a thin foam tape here so they don't sit too high. That way you don't see any of the white space underneath and it keeps the look nice and subtle. To finish it off I've added another of the birds and a strip of rose gold down the side to tie in with the best wishes sentiment. And this was another really quick and easy card to create. Let's switch things up a little and if you don't have or don't feel like using hexagons this is a really easy way to use circles instead. You can use punches or dies whatever you've got in your stash. I tend to keep both on hand because basic shapes like these are just so versatile. I've punched out a few circles and then cut them in half and I'm going to use these to create a border along the bottom of the card. I did try to line them up with a ruler but because my cutting wasn't perfectly even it's easier just to focus on keeping the bottoms aligned along the edge of the card. And to tidy the tops of the semi-circles up I'm adding a thin strip of that same brown it's almost antique gold cardstock across the top. It hides any little imperfections and gives a nice clean finish. And then I can add this beautiful floral paper to the top section. I find the easiest way to do this is to add my double-sided tape to the card front but leave the backing on along the bottom edge so I can line everything up first without it sticking straight away. And once it's in place I'll press it down and trim around the edges so it fits perfectly. And then to finish it off I'm adding a get well sentiment with some foam tape. Another really quick and easy card and you will see in a moment though I do end up adding a little something extra to this one.
