Ladies and gentlemen, JPL, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory,
has just released information on a new space rock
that's inbound for this evening into tomorrow, 2025 KE1.
It's moving at an incredible speed,
18.6 kilometers per second.
And as you can see, the inclination is absolutely huge.
It's a very large space rock.
They're guessing it's about 80 feet in diameter.
We're talking about an eight-story building here.
This rock is moving at 42,000 miles an hour.
Or just under 19 kilometers per second.
So we're talking about a fast-moving rock,
huge inclination, very large rock.
Lots of bad news for this situation.
Inbound, really, for this evening, around 8, 8 central time here,
although they're calling it out for the 23rd,
it will be the 23rd UTC time.
They've just released this information.
Now, this rock is not supposed to hit Earth,
but again, they just released the information
a few hours ago on today, the 22nd,
and the rock will make its close approach, going right
in between the Moon and Earth at some point this evening.
They're guesstimating around 8 p.m. Central right now.
Again, that's 2025 KE1, moving very fast.
A heck of an inclination, and it's going to make a very close approach,
flying directly between the moon and Earth.
Taking a look at some details here,
they actually only spotted the rock yesterday on the 21st.
I'm going to read first.
They've just announced it to us today on the 22nd.
74 total observations, which is quite a few for one day.
Data arc span, one day.
Bad news is, is the condition code is seven.
Nine, meaning they have no idea how big
the rock is or where it's headed.
Zero, meaning they have everything figured out.
We can all see that seven is much closer to nine,
highly uncertain, than to zero, very good and i.e. certain.
Again, the rock is coming in at a huge inclination.
Extremely high speed for an NEO, and it's a large rock,
thought to be around 80 feet diameter.
We can add an eight-story building that could hit Earth's atmosphere.
They have extrapolated several future flybys here
with the data that they already have
and see that the close approach to Earth
is going to be on the 23rd at 1:30,
But that really equates
to about 8:31 central time here in the U.S. tonight.
This is UTC time right here.
This rock does look like it's going to be actually twice as close
to Earth as it is our moon during its close flybys of each.
Talking about 0.001 astronomical units.
So again, flying between the moon and Earth, it looks like the closest.
It will be to Earth is around 8:31 this evening on the 22nd,
although they're calling it out as the 23rd here.
You can also move down here and see the velocity here,
18.65 kilometers per second.
Unbelievable, 42,000 miles an hour.
So in closing, this rock is not a city killer.
It's not a planet killer,
but it could cause serious problems for folks.
Anywhere near where it might break through
the atmosphere and hit Earth.
If it does hit the atmosphere,
it does have a very good potential of staying together
and becoming a meteorite instead of a meteor.
That said, get ready for 2025 KE1's
close flyby here in just a few hours.
God bless.
