At the dawn of a new political era in Los Angeles,
Karen Bass has conceded the mayoral
race clearing the way for Nithya Raman.
All right, so the new mayor-elect
is speaking out with the message of unity.
And I wanna tell every single Angeleno out there,
I am going to work so hard, and everyone
behind me is gonna work so hard to earn your trust,
to earn your trust, to earn the trust.
Here she was last night at the farmers market talking to
Some new voter to us, the people of Los Angeles and to the media.
So how will Angelenos respond to Raman's victory?
We got Mario Ramirez live at a 24-hour diner
in Silver Lake with more on what voters have to say.
Mario.
Bob Jen, that's right. The first challenger to replace,
beat a sitting mayor in more than 20 years.
And we're in Silver Lake here. This is part of the district
that Raman has represented for nearly six years.
I want to show you something. Astro Diner, just down the way,
you can see that group of Taco Bell workers. That's a young group.
They actually haven't been keeping up with the mayor's race,
so that kind of gives you an idea with where things stand
for the younger generation, but I was letting them know, hey,
we have a 45-year-old who's now replacing a 73-year-old Karen Bass,
so we've got some fresh energy here coming into City Hall.
So, you know, their ears went up. They were kind of excited about that.
Let's go to the video here.
Raman celebrating her victory yesterday
after defeating incumbent mayor Karen Bass.
She represents a generational shift in leadership,
and she says the issues that she's heard about
most on the campaign trail will drive her agenda at City Hall.
Take a listen.
The priorities that we've heard across
this entire city are homelessness, housing costs,
and public safety.
And economic development.
These are the issues that are the four top issues
on the minds across every neighborhood.
Whether you are in Studio City,
whether you are in Sylmar, whether you are in San Pedro,
whether you are in Wilmington, whether you are in Boyle Heights.
These are the four key issues that came up over and over again.
These will have to be the priorities that I take on in City Hall.
And we will have more plans to share as we are able to roll them out.
Yeah, first, she has to build her administration
and work with city council to deliver.
Meantime, outgoing mayor Karen Bass is acknowledging the results,
promising to work with Raman on a smooth transition.
So let's show you part of her statement.
She says, four years ago, you elected me
as the first black woman mayor in the history of Los Angeles.
You gave me the honor of serving the city that raised me,
and every single day since, I have carried that responsibility with me.
And she goes on to say, while this is not the outcome we hoped for,
the people of L.A. have spoken.
I called Councilwoman...
Nithya Raman to congratulate her on her victory,
and I've committed to ensuring a smooth and seamless transition.
Moving this city forward is what Los Angeles needs from all of us.
Now, she will officially, Raman, take office December 14th.
I want to quickly ask these two.
They're visiting from San Diego.
You said you've been keeping up with the mayoral race.
What do you think about this big political news?
I think it's a good change.
I think after so many years that it's time for a change.
And I think from what I've seen,
everybody's pretty much happy about it.
Yeah, and you guys are visiting as visitors.
What do you think that change should look like?
Oh, I, I...
She's the one to talk.
Okay, smart man, leave it up to the wife.
All right.
She's going to be good for the homeless problem that you guys have,
and we struggle with that also,
and I'm hoping that there will be change in that direction to help.
Thank you for sharing.
She wants to reduce homelessness in half by the 2028 Olympics,
one of her biggest campaign promises,
and we will see if she can deliver.
For now, that's the latest here in Silver Lake.
Back to you.
