Back with Martha Stewart, who has been in the news recently.
Over the weekend, she posted this picture dressed
as a homeless person for Halloween.
While that photo has subsequently been taken down,
the post caused a significant amount of backlash.
Martha did address it.
She issued an apology, but the story continues to make headlines.
So she's joining us this morning to set the record straight.
Martha, good morning.
Welcome back.
You're here to clear the air,
because there have been a number of different versions of this story.
Walk us through what happened.
Okay, well, it was Saturday, and it was Halloween,
and I was invited to a party.
And I was very busy all day, doing a lot of gardening,
planting lots of trees up at the farm.
And I really hadn't planned a Halloween costume this year.
Usually, you know, I'm a very elaborate Halloween costumer.
I've had the most beautiful costumes over the years.
And they're all online, you can look at them.
But I didn't have a costume because you had
spilled some chocolate on my white sweater.
And I don't blame you at all.
It was a joke that I said I blamed you.
It was not a joke.
It was stupid.
And then I, tone deaf or whatever I was,
according to my grandson, I was tone deaf.
I dressed up.
Well, not just your grandson.
Oh, no, no.
But that was, he saw the picture first.
Okay.
Because I sent it to him.
And I said, what do you think?
He told me that, he said, and I was just stupid.
And I apologize because I was not taking, I was not making fun
of anybody or making light of the great problems that face our country.
And I certainly hope our new administration takes big steps
to repair a lot of the damage that's being done and the poor
and the hungry and everyone else is taken care of better.
And why was I dragged into it?
Oh no, I was making a joke, I was giving a talk,
and I just made a joke that you would spill chocolate on me,
and so I couldn't wear that costume,
which I had planned to wear on Halloween night to this party.
And that became part of the story.
Yeah, you know, and of course he picked up on that.
Yeah.
That you're you.
Yes, but I did apologize.
For what?
For spilling the chocolate.
Oh, yeah.
And we moved on.
Yeah, and I moved on now.
But to be clear, there was no connection between
that and the costume later.
Oh, no.
Okay.
Oh, no, no, no.
What lessons did you...
And it wasn't your fault.
I'm sorry.
It goes on and on.
Yes.
What lessons learned?
Yeah.
Pay closer attention to social issues.
Be aware. I'm aware of all those social issues, as you can imagine.
And I care desperately about all the problems facing us.
But I made a mistake. I mean, I mean, I was.
Stupid. What else can I say? What else can I say? I'm so sorry.
And I hope that I hope that my followers and my and my fans
and the rest of America forgives me for doing something
that was not meant in any way to be a bad thing.
And so Martha Stewart wants to move on and she's apologized.
Absolutely.
