Which countries invest the most in the U.S.? It will surprise you to see which countries invest in the U.S. the most. Foreign direct investment flows have steadily climbed in recent years, fueled by the expansion of multinational companies. A growing share of that capital is now concentrated in a small number of economies, including the United States. For region of origin in 2023, the European Union leads the way by far with over $140 billion invested in the U.S. in 2023 alone, followed by Japan, believe it or not. Who invested over $40 billion into the U.S. in 2023. Other emerging markets also invested around $20 billion into the U.S. in 2023 combined. This would be a large group of countries whose economies are set to develop fast in the coming years. Some examples of this basket of countries include Indonesia, Peru, El Salvador, Argentina, Many of the African countries, like Ghana, Niger, and South Sudan, amongst others. Many of the ex-Soviet bloc countries, like Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Countries all over the world fall into this group, although they have been grouped together for the purposes of this report. Believe it or not, even China is considered an emerging market country. And they are grouped together with the other emerging market countries for the purpose of this report. Many other countries also invested heavily in the U.S. in 2023, with Canada investing just under $40 billion in the U.S. and the United Kingdom investing just over $36 billion in the U.S. in 2023 in total. The U.S. attracted over $311 billion in foreign direct investments in 2023, making it the top global recipient by far. And this was before Donald Trump took office. It seems like every country around the globe wants to invest in America's future, except for America, at least in 2023.
