SOHO films the death of a sun-grazing comet,
along with two large, what must be backside
normal mass ejections.
The solar system has one less comet to worry about.
The dirty snowball melted away yesterday
as it plunged into the Earth's outer atmosphere.
Chronographs on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory,
better known as SOHO, witnessed the
comet's final moments, as seen here.
In this SOHO clip, no peak disk covers the Sun.
Blocking its glare to produce an artificial eclipse,
this allowed SOHO's digital cameras
to see the comet around 500,000 kilometers from the surface of the sun.
This allows all of us
to watch as this comet nears our star
and slowly burns up as it enters the atmosphere
Around our star, the comet is a Kreutz Sun Grazer.
A family of comets, which are fragments from the breakup
of a single giant comet over 1,000 years ago,
SOHO has discovered thousands of these Kreutz,
sun-grazing comets,
almost all of them disintegrating near the sun.
Comets are icy dirt balls that orbit the sun.
Comets are made of ice and dust, while asteroids are made of rock.
An asteroid is a rocky object that orbits our sun.
Asteroids are smaller than planets,
but they are larger
and smaller objects made of rock that we call meteoroids. Meteoroids
are much smaller rocks. A meteor is a meteoroid
that impacts or enters Earth's atmosphere.
If it burns up upon entering Earth's atmosphere,
it keeps the name of a meteor.
But the meteor survives its trip through Earth's atmosphere
and lands on the surface of Earth.
Its name changes to a meteorite.
That said, we are now minus one unnamed comet in our solar system,
and I say good riddance.
Here is a quick visual of what we just discussed
by the American Meteor Society.
