MethaneSAT Satellite Suddenly Disappears!

A satellite designed to monitor methane emissions has gone missing in space. I've been mentioning to my subscribers and viewers for several months that it is believed the Gulf of America may be a huge methane chamber that was actually punctured by the BP Deepwater Horizons well several years ago. Dubbed the MethaneSat, the $88 million spacecraft was launched into orbit aboard a SpaceX rocket in March 2024 and was expected to collect data on the potent greenhouse gas for at least five years. But for the past two weeks, the satellite operators, the non-profit Environmental Defense Fund, have been unable to establish contact. I'm guessing those data emissions are now being monitored by another group or organization where the data is no longer going to be available to the public after the satellite proved methane gas was a much larger problem than hoped. The Environmental Defense Fund says that MethaneSat has lost power, saying that there is almost no hope of bringing it back online. Quote, it's likely not recoverable, the EDF said in a statement. The cause at this time is unknown, and an investigation into why communications were lost is ongoing. It's an agonizing loss, especially. As the mission, which was backed by Google and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, had proven that its advanced spectrometer instruments could pick out emissions from space and trace them back to their source with remarkable precision. The data that was collected for just under one year was magnificent, according to Stephen Hamburg, chief scientist at the EDF. Quote, we set out in the first year to demonstrate what was possible, that we could think about direct measurement of greenhouse gases in a way that we had never been able to do before, Hamburg added, and I think we demonstrated just that. Methane gas traps 28 times more heat than carbon dioxide and is considered to be the second biggest contributor to global warming. Many scientists fear, however, that we're actually underestimating methane's impact. That's because methane is a very leaky greenhouse gas, meaning that a lot of it escapes at its stored, transported, and drilled sites without being accounted for. Research suggests that gas companies are drastically underreporting the real methane emissions as a result. with it being in their best interest to turn a blind eye. There's no telling how much methane they've found naturally leaking from our planet either. To hold polluters accountable, numerous organizations, including NASA, have been monitoring methane gas from space. But methane sat. Purported to do it with enough accuracy to single out the specific facilities responsible, as the New York Times explained, data gathered by the satellite, which was being made publicly available, implicated oil and gas sites in North America and Central Asia as emitting far higher amounts of methane than predicted for the New York Times. I wonder what they really found. It's not how we would have wanted the mission to end, but with its satellite making a convincing case for itself before going out, the EDF is choosing to look on the bright side.
