St. Stephen residents react to U.S. midterm election results
Nov 4, 2026
U.S. voters cast ballots in an election that saw Democrats gain
majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate.
St. Stephen, New Brunswick shares a border with Maine,
where one of those Senate seats flipped from red to blue.
Here's what residents in the New Brunswick
border town had to say about the results,
which some see as a rebuke of President Donald Trump's agenda.
I'm optimistic, but not feeling like it's going to make much change,
but I'm hopeful for sure.
Hopeful of what exactly?
They'll stop listening to somebody who's speaking nonsense literally.
Renaming like
bodies of water and you know you're kind of out of control literally.
Very pleased yep yep because I think things are getting out of control.
It was nice it was surprising
and it was nice there is actually some good happening in the world.
Why would you say that?
Because it's been a... I can't say the word.
It's hard.
It's been crazy and it's been scary.
Like, yeah, it's watching a democracy fall is kind of crazy.
Well, I'm really happy and thrilled that we've got
the Democrats getting so many seats in the Senate and in Congress.
I think that'll really help put some checks and balances in place
with the free reign that Trump has had over the last couple of years.
I loved it. I truly loved it.
I mean, yeah, he shot himself in the foot, like I said earlier.
It looked good on him.
Because I think it's going to help us.
I think it's going to help us in the trade negotiations.
I think that's what it's going to help.
I think Carney's got some leverage now.
He has got some support where he didn't have before
with Republican Congress and Republican Senate.
So he does have that now.
Tuesday's results are offering hope to some,
but whether it brings about much change from the White House
remains to be seen.
