Vice President J.D. Vance has blamed the Iran war
for the Republican rout in Tuesday's
midterm elections that saw Democrats seize
in control of both the House and the Senate.
In a long post on X, he said, the reason we lost is the war.
The president himself said so
last night. If you'd like to argue it was worth it,
that losing the Senate for the next six years
was worth it, then do so.
Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree,
that's at least honest. But everyone knows why we lost.
And any honest conversation about where we go
from here must start here.
Kimberly, so the vice president, as we heard a little earlier, already
pointing to the Iran war as a factor in the Republicans' huge losses.
Is this an acknowledgment within the White House
that the conflict has become a political liability?
Well, there were always differences of opinion
when it came to foreign entanglements between
the U.S. president and the vice president,
and this is really being seen as J.D. Vance's
I told you so moment.
Now, while there is a lot of finger-pointing going on,
there's no question that the U.S.
president is trying to deflect the blame,
something that his own vice president is not
allowing him to do.
Now, that's part of it.
Partially, because we know that there
were private conversations between the two where
the U.S. president was warned against starting a foreign war,
given the fact that that was
one of his major campaign promises,
that he would do just the opposite of what he did.
So the other issue in all
of this is that Donald Trump made himself the center of the
midterm campaign, saying to voters that they need to—
Pretend he's on the ballot, and that's exactly what they did,
and they rejected his choice
to start the war with Iran,
as well as the high costs that resulted from not just that,
but also his tariff policies.
Now, as we have been talking about, the president,
or rather the vice president, J.D. Vance,
has said that this is the reason that they believe
that they lost, but there is a lot
of soul-searching that is going on within
the Republican Party right now, but it's very
clear that...
The message that was sent by the voters
was an anti-President Trump vote.
