Washington voters weighed in on three statewide initiatives
taking on economic and social issues.
This morning, the vote is split on support
for those measures.
Sean Chitnis is live with more on the results so far.
Sean, good morning.
Aaron, good morning.
And while it is too close to call,
On each of these issues, we do see where they are trending right now.
And there are two in which Washington voters appear to be rejecting it.
One that is on track to be approved.
And so let's begin with that one.
That is Initiative 638,
which would prohibit transgender girls from competing in a K through
12 sports program that doesn't match
the gender they were assigned at birth.
It would require students to verify
their biological sex to compete in gender specific
sports.
A majority of voters are so
We're supporting it right now, almost 57% in favor, 43% opposed.
Washington is one of four states asking voters
to weigh in on this issue
with some kind of ban.
Polling has shown most Americans support this kind of policy.
In Washington, it is considered
to be one of the most contentious topics
in the ballots statewide.
It would be so rewarding to see
that the adults are finally taking that stand
and having the courage to stand up for us girls.
But then again, there's so much to be done, and it would be incredible.
It would be so relieving, a breath of fresh air to know
that Washington is taking a step in the right direction.
It shouldn't be about coming in first or second or third in a race.
It should be about learning who you are,
and it should be about teams embracing each other.
So the other initiative taking on matters in schools is Initiative One,
which would repeal recent amendments on specific rights for parents
and guardians of public school students.
It expands their access to records and gives more permissions.
Voters are rejecting this measure about 52% against 48% in favor.
And then finally, 645. That's a repeal on the state's 9.9% tax
on people making more than $1 million a year.
It would also ban future income taxes and reduce
Funding for education and health care.
Almost 60% of Washington residents want to keep that tax.
And we'll have another update on how voting is looking later today.
And we'll have more reaction on these initiatives in our next hour.
