So we want to go over first,
before we bring in Sandeep and Randy into the conversation,
we do want to turn to reporter Lauren Donovan,
because she's at the Let's Go Washington party
where, you know, Let's Go Washington,
Brian Haywood, he is the founder of that Let's Go
Washington group that is behind
the three ballot initiatives on the ballot this year.
So you're in Redmond, Lauren, what is the vibe there?
I know that we don't have any of those results yet,
so I'm sure people on that side waiting
for those results.
Thank you.
Yeah, so right here, Hannah, we are in a barn, actually.
I'm standing up in the rafters. If
you're familiar with 60 Acres Soccer Fields,
we're not too far away from that right now.
And this is a big gathering of really
the conservative advocates here in Washington
State. Brian Haywood, the man behind
Let's Go Washington, just spoke briefly
about transgender participation
in girls' sports here in Washington State.
And that is one of the ballot initiatives
of the three ballot initiatives brought forth by
this group, Let's Go Washington, that I want to dive into specifically.
So, if you're not familiar with this,
if you didn't check your ballot, I bet you didn't
because this is a real hot button issue.
But in summary, initiative 638
is prohibiting transgender student athletes from competing
in girls' interscholastic sports.
So it would require every student participating
in those girls' competitions to provide a
signed statement from a healthcare
provider verifying their biological sex.
Now, this is Ron Iyer from both sides of the aisle,
it's been a hot button issue.
We saw it playing out in Camas, Washington.
Within the last couple of weeks making national headlines
when girls on the cross country
team there walked off in protest or on counter protest.
I was able actually handed to speak to a couple
of young student athletes, two young girls
here that are in high school, one from Tumwater,
one from East Wenatchee about their experience.
They are here advocating for a yes vote on this initiative.
Take a listen to what they had to say.
I competed against a male competitor in the 1600 in eighth grade
and now I'm a junior and I've
competed against four biological males
and I might be competing against one soon at state for
cross-country this weekend.
We need people to use their voice to take a stand for the girls.
Neither of us are old enough to vote yet
and that's why it's that much more important that
we've had the adults take that opportunity
and have the courage to vote for us.
Anneli, who was the first girl that you heard from there,
she's referencing potentially
participating against that Camas high school student
that has been in the headlines having
joined the girls cross country team.
So we're gonna keep up with them throughout the rest of the night.
Obviously, we wanna get their reaction, yay or nay.
I've been talking to them about it.
They're feeling confident.
They themselves are not eligible to vote.
They're too young at this point.
So they're telling me they're hoping
that Washington voters who are eligible stand up
Now, Brian Hayward was out here giving remarks within
the last 10, 15 minutes or so.
He is the guy behind this political action committee,
Let's Go Washington, once again.
And he was saying that there have been encouraging signs
in other states like Colorado with similar
initiatives pushing against transgender participation in girls' sport.
It'll be interesting to see how that plays out here.
Hannah and David, we'll send it back to you.
