How Trump's broken promises on war, inflation handed Democrats the midterms

Donald Trump has started his second term, promising to be a peacemaker.
We will measure our success not only by the battles we win,
but also by the wars that we end,
and perhaps most importantly, the wars we never get into.
My proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker and unifier.
So many of the U.S. president's supporters
were disappointed to see him instigating
fresh foreign entanglements,
including attacking Venezuela and capturing its leader,
Nicolas Maduro, threatening to take control of Greenland,
and in February of this year,
launching joint strikes with Israel,
killing Iran's supreme leader in the opening salvo of the Iran War
The conflict has since contributed to a cost-of-living crisis
in the U.S., pushing up gas prices
and overall consumer inflation.
It was a political gift for Democrats,
who hammered home this message during the campaign
for the midterms.
It is their war in Iran that is raising
the price of our gas and our groceries.
It is their tariff war that's raising the price of everything else.
Speaking by telephone to Fox News after the polls,
the U.S. president himself recognized
the impact of inflation on the results.
I don't think it's the war, though, Brad.
I think it's the gasoline price.
People agree with what I'm doing on Iran,
but they really probably weren't willing to
do the short-term consequence of paying more for gasoline.
Meanwhile, reacting to the vote, Iran's supreme leader has said
he doesn't believe U.S. policy on the conflict will change.
Those who still harbor even the slightest hope that the behavior of the
hegemonic system might change through partisan or factional shifts,
or who imagine that making concessions
to the United States can dissuade it from hostility towards
the Iranian nation, are seriously mistaken.
With Democrats now set to take control of both houses of Congress,
going forward they could vote
to restrict further spending on the conflict.
The overall cost of the Iran war
for the U.S. has grown to over $47 billion.
Dollars.
