Today we're heading to the Sakhirin Mosque.
The Sakhirin Mosque opened up for visitors
and worshippers on the 7th of May 2009, a project
funded by the Sakhir Foundation in the memory of Ibrahim
and Semiha Sakhir. The project and result
of the construction is like no other.
The Sakhirin Mosque is designed by Zeynep Fadilioğlu
The great niece of Ibrahim and Semiha Sakhir
and the first woman to design a mosque.
Masjid Sakhirin was opened for visitors
and jamaah on May 7, 2009.
This mosque was funded by Sakhir Foundation
to introduce Ibrahim and Semiha Sakhir.
This mosque was designed by
Zeynep Fadilioğlu, the daughter of Ibrahim and Samiha Sakhir.
And she is the first woman to design a mosque.
Growing up in Istanbul, Zeynep Fadilioğlu has always
been largely influenced by the rich mixture of modern
and traditional atmospheres in the booming city.
Take
the rug.
The low-hanging chandelier is a new unique feature
with drops hanging symbolizing the reflection of
prayer, meaning that Allah's light should fall on the worshippers like rain.
The rings of the chandelier
are decorated with 99 names of Allah
and the name of the mosque besides from
reflecting the family name is the literal meaning
from those who are thankful.
So right now, we are going to be heading towards our mosque.
That has something unique inside.
Now we are going to the mosque, which is one of the treasures
of Istanbul that only goes to narrow streets,
different from the crowded Sultanahmet area.
This mosque is called Sokullu Mehmet Pasa Mosque,
which presents a beautiful place to see,
not only because of its quiet and peaceful environment,
but also because of its architectural features.
The mosque that we are going to visit is located
in the district of Kadırga, which is located near Sultan Ahmed.
Sokullu Mehmet Pasha Mosque
and its social complex have been there for four centuries.
Built by Sinan Sang Arsitek under the name of Wazir
of the Ottoman Empire, Sokullu Mehmet Pasha.
Who is Sokullu Mehmet Pasha?
We will talk about his greatness.
One of Istanbul's hidden treasures is located in the Kadırga district,
which is a neighbourhood
close to Sultanahmet.
The Sokullu Mehmet Pasha Mosque and its social complex have been standing
there for four centuries. It was built by Sinan the architect.
In the name of the Ottoman Empire's
famous Grand Vizier Sokullu Mehmet Pasha,
Sinan the architect was the most famous
and skillful architect in the Ottoman history.
Four pieces, one, two, three, go up, three, go upstairs.
This piece of stone comes
from the most sacred place for Ka'bah Muslims.
In one corner of the Ka'bah, there is a stone known as Hajar Aswad.
It is believed that it came down from heaven.
Four small parts of it are located at different points in this mosque.
People who do not have the opportunity to visit a holy place
and the stone has come to this mosque for centuries.
So right now we're in the mosque
and here we see the hidden treasures of Istanbul
And there is...
Four pieces of Hajar Aswad in this mosque.
The Ottoman Empire took non-Muslim boys from the Balkans
based on a system called devsirma,
which is to gather boys to be raised in the kingdom.
According to this system, boys aged 10 to 12 years
were taken from their families,
then entered Islam and sent to military schools
or administrations in Istanbul,
where they were educated to serve the country in various positions.
The Ottoman Empire took non-Muslim boys
from the Balkans based on a system called devsrimi,
namely collecting boys to raise for the empire.
According to this system,
boys aged 10 to 12 were taken from their families, converted
to Islam and sent to military or administrative schools in Istanbul,
where they were educated
to serve the state in different positions.
And one of them was Sokullu Pasha.
Sokullu Mehmet Pasa comes from a simple Serbian royal family.
He is a very smart
and trusted Grand Vizier of the Empire in the Ottoman Empire,
serving several administrative offices for 35 years.
He served in the government of three different sultans during
the reign of Sultan Suleiman I, Selim II, and Sultan Murad III.
Masjid ini dibangun sebagai hadiah putri Ismihan Hatun,
putri Selim II, kepada suaminya Sokullu Mehmet Pasha.
It is said that Sokullu Mehmet Pasha's wife,
Sultan Ismihan Hatun, was the daughter of Selim II,
subsidized by the construction of the mosque
and its social complex as a gift for her husband.
