We can go now to Washington, D.C., once again,
to our international affairs editor, Ketavan Ghorjastani.
Hello again, Ketavan.
This has been one hell of a night for the Democrats.
Absolutely.
Look, we came into this election cycle and this election day
sort of wondering how big the wave was going to be
for the Democrats in the House.
It turns out that it is pretty much heading into tsunami territory.
Doing better for the Democrats than they had probably hoped
for and also taking control of the Senate.
Remember, if we look back just a few months ago,
people were saying, look.
The Democrats are probably going to win back the House,
but for the Senate, it's going to be a little bit more complicated.
And now not only are they taking back control of the Senate,
but it looks like they're going to take it back
by more seats than initially indicated or hoped for by the Democrats.
And to jump on what Andres was talking about, about this redistricting
and how it backfired on Republicans, it didn't just backfire.
In Texas, as we're seeing already,
some of those seats being won by Democrats.
Same thing happening in Florida.
There are four districts there that were redrawn
by the Republicans to make them more.
Republican leaning. Three of those have already
been won by the Democrats and the fourth is on
its way to be flipped by the Democrats.
The Republicans also losing that one district that
they redrew in North Carolina. So this is really all over the map.
So the strategy of the Republicans
also backfired. We're in such a sort of context
and political headwind against the Republican,
against the party.
power against the sitting president of the United States,
Donald Trump, that everywhere
the Democrats either won by much larger margins than they had expected,
or even where they
lost, you saw them gain
and gain in places that they shouldn't even have been competitive
in.
And that's how we're ending up with these kinds of numbers.
And that's how we're ending up, for example, with a race
for the Senate that is currently head-to-head tied in Mississippi,
a ruby red state where we could end up with a Democrat,
maybe a Republican, but the race is so close.
And that's something that no one had expected.
