Investigation underway into a police-involved shooting.
This is in the Bronx.
A 49-year-old man was shot several times,
and police say officers were forced to fire
when the man pointed a gun at them.
Francis Wang, what's going on with this story?
Well, Rosanna, Dan, this all unfolded at a deli in the Bronx.
On a Monday afternoon,
a man arguing with several people pulled out a gun
and started pointing that gun,
which led the other customers to duck in fear.
This is the gun police say they found on 49-year-old Victor Soto.
So he was at...
The Sammy Gourmet Deli on Bainbridge Avenue
and East 194th Street in the Fordham section.
This was around 3 o'clock yesterday.
Police just happened to be on patrol.
That's when they saw Soto banging his gun on the window of the store.
And what happened next, police say, is what led to the shootout.
At this point, two uniformed officers
in a marked NYPD vehicle arrive on scene.
Observe the subject's actions and immediately issue verbal commands
for the subject to drop the weapon.
The subject not only disregarded the order
to drop the weapon, but instead pointed the
firearms directly at the officers.
At this point, there is an exchange
of gunfire between the officers and the subject.
As the subject is discharging his weapon,
he is continuing northbound and firing behind
him in broad daylight.
Soto was shot several times
and he was taken to the hospital where he is now stable
and he is expected to recover.
We have learned Soto has been arrested eight times in the past
for charges including assault and possession of a firearm.
A law enforcement source also tells us
that Soto has a documented history of mental illness.
Neighbors in the area tell us he lives
nearby and that he's actually someone known for getting into arguments.
As we're getting home, right,
they're shooting each other and the stuff.
They lock the street, the police come real quick and everything.
Now the NYPD's Force Investigation Division is reviewing
the shooting as they always do in these situations.
Police body camera footage
and surveillance from the deli will be key pieces of evidence
as investigators work to determine what happened here
and who fired first.
Dan?
Good questions. Thank you very much, Francis.
