It's been a year since Dwight's coffee house opened in Prince Albert.
Gloria Sanderson happily serves coffee, lattes,
homemade soups, and fresh bannock from Monday to Friday.
I've always liked making soups and making,
I just remember growing up that, you know,
when people came in, you always fed them and,
you know, made sure they had something to drink.
Just made them feel welcome, and I just thought that,
you know, we need something like that here.
Sanderson is from Pelican Narrows.
She wanted to start this business as a way to honour her son,
Dwight, who died three years ago.
So she named the coffee house after him.
I wanted to create something meaningful from our loss,
and it gives us the opportunity to share love, kindness.
With today's economy,
her husband Derek was worried when his wife told him of her idea.
But he came around and jumped on board.
I guess I caught her vision and what she wanted to do.
So from there, I just went all in.
And, you know, here we are.
Sixteen months later, and things are going awesome.
The community's great, so I think it was the right choice.
Now, things are busy at the coffeehouse,
and Derek even took it upon himself to learn how to make bannock.
I would say a lot of the cookums are surprised.
They actually test the bannock for the firmness of the bannock.
And, you know,
You know, overall look, like it is actually scrutinized quite hard.
So, but overall, it's good, though.
People are happy with it.
Gloria says the cafe is more than just coffee.
It's a place for people to come in,
feel safe and enjoy community connection.
