We'll attend all across San Francisco's Mission District Dia
de los Muertos celebrations,
taking over streets tonight as large crowds attend
the 45th annual Day of the Dead procession.
KTVU's Zach Sauce, live tonight
in San Francisco with more on the story.
Zach.
Yeah, and the celebration's really something tonight.
The music, the colorful costumes, and of course the ofrendas,
each one beautifully crafted
and the stories behind them, deeply moving.
The 45th annual Dia de los Muertos
procession winding its way through San
Francisco's Mission District Monday night,
just a few blocks away,
a more subdued celebration
at Potrero del Sol Park.
I'd always done the procession
prior to my mother passing,
and then when my mother passed,
I built altars for her in Garfield Park.
Then the pandemic hit and I've been building them in home since
this is my first time back doing it in a public milieu on KR Morrison's
altar known as an a friend of tributes to her mother Charlotte
to Christine, a woman who helped raise her and to her aunt Vicky.
That's part of the process is that sort of paradox of party.
Mixed with tears all across the park dozens of vibrantly decorated
displays families reflecting on those they've lost and we get to have
a day where we honor them and we give them everything that they loved
while they were here, keeping their memories alive
while connecting with neighbors and learning their stories.
Oh my God, I love seeing people's families.
I love learning about them. I love asking them about them.
Sophia honoring her friend who recently passed. I loved him so much.
He's right here. He was a beautiful person, genuine.
He was just one of a kind across the park for visitors without
no friend, an opportunity to leave messages for loved ones.
I wrote one for my dad. He passed away when I was an infant,
so I don't have much memory of him, but
My I know he's a great guy just based off what my mom
and siblings told me about him.
So I wish I got the chance to like know I'm growing up,
but hope he's doing well in heaven for newcomers like him.
An introduction to the holiday,
an introduction to how grief and celebration can coexist.
I think it's wonderful that this is offered for the community.
Yeah, quite a celebration tonight.
45 years of the Mission District
hosting its procession, and Mike,
it did not disappoint.
