Santiago Carbonell Painter Ecuador 1960

Santiago Carbonell was born in 1960 in Quito, Ecuador, son of a Catalan father and an Ecuadorian mother. At the age of one year and a half they moved to Barcelona, Spain, where he spent his childhood and adolescence. According to Carbonell's words, he made his first drawing when he was 8 years old, and he remembers it very well, since it was a black bull, whose teacher made him erase some monumental testicles that shone and hung on the animal like bells. When he was thirteen years old, living in Barcelona which was under the tyranny of Franco, he was impressed by Peter Paul Rubens painting, The Rape of the Daughters of Leucippus.
He decided to become a painter at seventeen years old, being part of the circles of young painters in Barcelona attracted by Informalism. Tàpies was the father of them all, at that time Santiago Carbonell was irresistibly interested by matter painting and tachism, although he experimented with cubism, and surrealism as well. He explored surrealism by studying Salvador Dali in deep, but finally Carbonell stayed with the realistic elements.
He immigrated to Mexico in 1986 where he married María Gabriela Miranda. He is the father of four Mexican children and currently resides in the city of Queretaro, Mexico. His strong discipline, tenacious study and refined self-taught talent, has led him to travel the world, surprising the viewer with a personal perception of painting. He is a prominent representative of the hyperrealism trend, although - as he declares himself - his aesthetic is not based on reproducing what reality or photography represent, but on inventing from them.
