22 news is your local.
22 News is your local election
headquarters and tomorrow is election day.
22 News anchor Julia O'Keefe is working for you with a look
at the contested races facing Western Massachusetts voters this year.
Control of Congress is at stake in this year's midterm elections,
with Democrats hoping to take control of the House and the Senate
and Republicans looking to hang on to their majorities.
Here in Massachusetts, Democratic Senator Ed Markey
is hoping to secure a third full term in office.
He's being challenged by Republican John Deaton,
as well as independent candidate Shiva Ayyadurai and Joe Teixeira,
who's a member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation. In the House,
Democratic Congressman Richard Neal is running for his 20th term.
in Congress. He's facing a challenge
from Independent Nadia Milleron. The race is a
rematch from 2024 when Milleron also challenged Neal.
All statewide elected officials are up for
election this year and that includes the governor's office.
Incoming Governor Maura Healey has two
challengers on the ballot,
Republican Mike Minogue and Independent Andrea James. There are also
contested races for Attorney General,
Secretary of State, State Treasurer and State Auditor.
Also getting attention this year are nine statewide ballot questions.
Question one would expand the state's public records law,
ending the exemption for the governor's office and the legislature.
Question two would allow lawyers
for the Committee for Public Counsel Services
to form a union and bargain collectively.
Question three would create a single primary
for candidates of all party affiliations
with the winners advancing to the general election.
Question four would allow voters
to register to vote on Election Day itself
instead of the current registration cutoff 10 days before the election.
Question 5 would change the limit
on how much revenue the state can collect,
factoring in revenue collected
from the state's fair share tax on incomes over $1 million.
Question 7 would allow construction of single-family homes
on lots of at least 5,000 square feet in size.
Question 8 would ban the retail sale
and taxation of adult-use recreational marijuana.
And Question 9 asks voters whether
or not to repeal the state's 2024 law
that tightened firearms regulations in Massachusetts.
Also on the ballot are a number of contested state legislative races
and a special election for sheriff in Franklin County.
