I also want to talk about John Early and...
All day, please.
They're so funny.
And Divine Joy Randolph.
Did you guys...
Like, was that on the page?
Were you kind of letting them riff?
Like, there's magic.
So it was on the page, and they...
They were always quite big characters on the page
but they were so much better
than I ever imagined and I think what
ends up happening is they're so great
you just go home at night after a shoot
and you write extra scenes for them and
I would come in the next day with like
like new lines for them they're like oh
my god David more dialogue. But they're just so endlessly
inspiring because their dynamic was so brilliant.
And there's a beautiful scene in the film
where it's just the two of them discussing their roles
and walking into this junction as it wakes up.
I wrote that a couple of days beforehand
just because I just want more of them.
I want a scene where it's just them.
It's not the others, it's just them.
And so yeah, with all the actors, they were so brilliant.
You're just responding to how great they are
and giving them as good as the best material you possibly can.
And yeah, there's some...
Brilliant jokes on the cutting room floor
that just didn't make the film.
But like Divine, at the end of every scene,
she would just do something hilarious.
And sometimes it's in there, but there's a lot that you haven't seen.
Oh, really?
Yeah.
Do you have plans for bloopers or anything?
I'll talk to A24, I'll see what we can do.
But yeah, they're just so brilliant.
So brilliant.
And I'm curious, like, process-wise for you,
like, having written it and then when you're directing it,
like, how much were they in the script beforehand?
How much are you, like, loose with it?
They, over the course of the writing of those roles,
Anna and Ryan, they...
They got bigger and bigger and bigger.
And originally they didn't have their own
will they, won't they?
And I just thought that would be so much fun.
So they just kept growing.
And they do kind of act like the Greek chorus in this.
They are the people that explain the rules, so to speak,
and guide these characters through this weird, crazy world.
So they just grew.
And I think what was amazing is
Davon and John's chemistry with Lizzie,
Miles and Callum is extraordinary and so you want to
have them together as much as possible
and I think our favorite days on set were the days we had all
five of them together like it was they
were just like kids they were just playing and that was
amazing to watch. It's not a competition! Yes it is!
Sweetheart is 100% for sure a competition.
It is in fact a competition. That's literally what we're here for.
