Saturday night in Germany. Shop windows are smashed. Petrol bombs are thrown at emergency personnel. Police arrest a suspect and recover two weapons after a gun shop is broken into. Across the border, France is experiencing its third consecutive weekend of mass demonstrations. The same thing goes for Spain, Italy, Poland, the UK, and even more countries. The people marching say they want a better society. But what happens when the flames reach the neighborhood? Welcome to News Planet. I'm your host, Kathleen Lee. In France, demonstrations had drawn hundreds of thousands and descended into some of the country's worst unrest in years. In Spain, Barcelona's October 24th mobilization explicitly borrowed language from France's student movement. It ended with fires, looting, and arrests. Then came Germany's October 31st demonstrations, organized by Gen Z regelt, Gen Z takes charge. Violence later erupted in Frankfurt, Cologne, Hamburg, and Berlin. German authorities say extremist factions infiltrated the mobilization. The stories can go on and on about the chaos happening in these countries, and many more. So why is violence sweeping all across Europe? There are genuine connections across these movements. Housing pressures, education funding, political distrust, and anxiety about the future recur, as well as arguments on the treatment of immigrants. However, that is the main weakness that allowed this mass operation to escalate. The majority of people that usually lead protests and advocate for change are young adults, as they tend to be more passionate as the world's next leaders. And when social media is made to hook young people, they are the group influenced the quickest. While right-wing ideologies are logically sound, leftists possess a crucial yet corrupt strength that easily recruits people — moving the heart. With left-wing platforms and ideas spreading online, that combination is effective but deadly. It makes even the kindest person lose sight of reason and into a character of chaos and violence. Thus, the recent chain of events occurred, making these young people destroy and hurt everyone they love in the process. And some of the people making them lose themselves are the very immigrants that they swore to protect. A political cause does not become more humane because its supporters describe themselves as heroes. Its humanity is tested by what they are willing to do to other people.
