Protesters gathered outside Poland's Constitutional Court
for a second day on Saturday as the country's political crisis deepens.
The showdown began on Friday when the court's president was suspended
and a group of government-backed judges attempted
to seize procedural control of the tribunal.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government has
been trying for weeks to force out the court's judges,
Arguing they are not politically neutral.
...but has faced fierce resistance
from the right-wing Law and Justice Party,
whose former government appointed them.
Resistance echoed by supporters
of the right-wing party outside the court.
My son and I will take turns for as long as it takes,
as many days as necessary.
There is no deadline.
We'll see how it all develops because we have elections in a year
and a lot of damage can be done in that year.
It's the latest in a string of clashes between Tusk
and Polish President Karol Nawrotzki,
who is an ally of the former government.
Earlier this year, Nawrotzki refused to swear
in five judges nominated by the Polish parliament.
On Saturday, the European Commission urged him
to approve the new judges.
Addressing the nation on Saturday evening,
Tusk accused the Law and Justice Party
of attempting to destroy democracy in Poland.
Attack on the tribunal of his judge.
The attack on the Constitutional Tribunal
and its judges is yet another chapter in the
process of destroying the rule of law in Poland,
a process driven by the Law and Justice Party,
as well as Presidents Duda and Nawrotzki.
Together with the parliamentary majority,
They made attempts to repair the tribunal.
There was no doubt that the tribunal in the form imposed by the Law
and Justice Party was
not a genuine court.
Poland's Constitutional Court plays
a crucial role in approving government decisions.
It's responsible for deciding whether laws comply
with Poland's constitution
and its rulings can prevent legislation from taking effect.
