Musical creativity and community thrive at Blue Door Recordings
Nov 1, 2026
Yeah, we're going to go again. Eight clicks and then in.
The Blue Door sound is, yes, the gear,
the room, but also back to the people, too.
It's how the artist feels in the space
and how they feel they can open up and express.
I'm just here to capture.
I still remember. It's like the most vivid memory.
I was like sitting right here.
And I was just like tuning my guitar playing
and this was I haven't recorded any guitar at all in years.
At that point I had just done the hip-hop stuff
and then Walt was like setting up my guitar mics
and I just kind of like looked up
and I was like Walt I feel like I might be kind of good at music.
This was the first professional studio like I recorded
in especially like with Samurai Champs
like the hip-hop band. For both me and my best friend Savan like
the rapper in the band this was our first time.
Really recording in a commercial studio,
but also it kind of signified something different.
It's kind of signified like, oh this is almost like a pivot in faith.
This is when we're going to maybe try
to start taking it more seriously,
that we need people that are experts within their field,
especially like engineering-wise, sonic-wise.
We have the most accessibility
to audio that we've ever had,
and the most amount of audio being uploaded to Spotify,
for example, 100,000 songs a day.
So it's like, okay, there's a lot of noise happening.
There's a lot of people trying to break through.
Where the studio comes into that, again,
is just capturing the essence of what's happening
in the best way possible.
And it's like having the microphone selection
and the ears to know which microphone
to place on an artist to capture that.
It's very much like a camera.
You know, it's like,
how are you representing what's happening?
How are you capturing that personality
and that character of what's coming out of that artist?
And then again,
Translating it through the speakers,
so the studio allows you to capture something. It's very pure.
Yeah, I think that's just really important, you know,
because like especially as time goes on there's just
more and more artists, more and more genres that appear,
especially in Saskatchewan and Regina.
Everyone knows like as time moves on, just like diversity of ideas,
of culture, everything kind of increases.
It's really important for a space like Blue Door
to exist in Regina, I think.
I just look at it as that.
I'm just here to capture an essence or a vibe of what's happening,
and I try not to get in the way of that.
I just recognize it for what it is, and I
want to translate it to the rest of the world.
Gold, silver, diamonds for sure.
Awesome. All right, let's do a take through, Zoj.
Okay.
What I love about this community
is it's you're seeing people from different genres and bands
coming together and starting to play together too.
I feel like the talent that we have here
is so immense and they're starting
to really recognize each other and saying hey let's
let's do this together let's play together let's maybe even go
on tour together whatever it is
there's so many little connections
happening across all age ranges. This is
home studio right here.
Like, I have not been to any other studios that just draws me like
Blue Door. I think it's also because my friends pretty much work here
and they're not just friends
anymore. Like, Walter is literally my engineer now.
It's convenient. A lot of my songs were
We're written with Saskatchewan stories.
Every...
Life path that I've been on every romantic story with a happy
or sad ending is from here.
The craft definitely evolves quite a bit.
The craft, I feel like, evolves every year.
The sound of the culture is constantly changing.
So I've had to learn to adapt with the tools
and the sound of what's going on and change with it as well.
So how I've grown, really, it's like...
A big part of how I do this is practice I think
is a very important component
and I feel it pulled that from my classical background.
I do have my own sound. I think I do because I'm very experimental.
I think I'm not like a traditional writer
and I really don't think about verse one, verse two,
verse three when I'm writing music.
I think it comes after. I figure okay where is the
verse? Okay this sounds like a verse one
but yes I do have my own sound.
There's no genre bounds, like there's hip-hop,
R&B, folk, country, everything and doing that
always keeps things very interesting
and learning about the different genres
and finding ways to take some things from some genre
and bleed them into others
and creating kind of a mash-up. It's always, yeah, I just love it.
So for me...
I just I would always prefer Blue Door and I'm
so like my friends are like literally my life at
this point with regards to like the music like Walter
is always behind every record like we've
grown so much together you know um I've
been recording at the the Blue Door since 2018.
My first ever studio was studio session
was in the little studio at the back yes
It's become more of a community and this place is a place where artists
can feel safe to come and express and whatever song they've written,
they can come into the room and feel at ease here. It's always chill.
We're just capturing a performance. We're capturing a vibe.
You know, there's always a friendship and a relationship
that develops out of this and a bond when you create with people.
