Proteins in nature solve all the problems that arose during evolution.
They digest our food,
they mediate the currents going through our brain when we think,
they power our motion.
They're almost like magical things and the promise of being able
to design new proteins is that we can now solve
these problems that weren't
relevant during evolution but are really important for humans today.
These are challenges nature never faced,
things that nature never had the time or chance to develop against,
such as degrading man-made pesticides,
curing Alzheimer's disease,
finding this new cancer target,
fixing nitrogen in a more environmentally friendly way.
This project began about a year ago
with a very small group of researchers
from both NVIDIA Research
and the Baker Lab here at the University of Washington
The collaboration with NVIDIA has been great
in fundamental level algorithm optimization,
the incredible expertise.
It showed me what kind of innovation is possible
at the right place and the right time with
the right resources.
RFdiffusion 4 Protea unites concepts from the RF
Diffusion series of models with concepts from
the Protea Complex series of models developed
at NVIDIA to make something that's more powerful
than any previous model.
When we first saw the results of the computer,
we couldn't believe them.
They were actually too good to be true.
We wanted to put the model to a real test.
It takes so long to go from that idea or proof of concept
to like a vial of a drug that can be injected into a patient.
It's like a 10 to 12 year process
and it's like a billion dollars in between.
With the introduction of RFdiffusion 4 Protea,
we see these molecules that we can take directly
off the computer
and not only do they bind to the target that we intend, there's this
ten to a thousand fold increase in the tightness
with which these designs are binding.
It's an incredible advancement in terms
of using these computational tools to speed up
the process of drug design.
I work on making enzymes that break down pesticides.
Enzymes are great because they do very selective chemistry,
so ultimately it's cleaner for the world.
I've been working on this problem for a year.
With the new model, RFdiffusion 4 Protea,
we did it in just four days.
And not only that, but the best one that we found
was over a thousand times better
than the previous enzymes I had developed over the past year.
The way chemistry is done is going to be changed forever.
I'm very excited to see all the great things that people do with RFD4
Protea and how it makes the world a better place.
