Okay, so to begin our heart scarf,
we're going to go ahead and put a slipknot on our hook.
The tail just needs to be long enough to weave in at the end.
We're actually going to use our
ending tail as our sewing tail
so that way you don't have to fuss with a long tail while you're
working because usually when you start off
with a long tail it always gets in your way. So we're
So we're going to leave the long tail for the end of the project.
So, my very first instructions are to chain 52,
so we just yarn over, turn our hook down
and pull through, and we're keeping these the size of our shaft,
not too tight, but
not loose, because we don't want a really loose foundation row,
we want it to be the
same as the rest of our rows,
because we're sewing it up to the ending row, and we don't
want it a little wide compared to our finishing row.
So try to keep your chains the same size as your shaft.
So make 52 chains total, and then we'll begin row one instructions.
Okay, I've made my 52 chains,
and now I'm ready for my row one instructions.
And it says to begin working my linked double crochets
in the fourth chain from my hook.
Now these first three chains that I'm skipping count
as a double crochet, so I actually need to link into this.
Now, normally you're going to have your crossbar that you're going
to link into, which you'll see in just a second,
but with this chain three,
we don't have a crossbar, we only have chains.
So what I'm going to do is I'm going to use this middle chain,
I'm just going to grab this loop that's here on the left,
I'm going to use that in place of my middle bar.
So I'm putting my hook through that chain
and I'm yarning over and pulling up the loop
so that counts as my normal yarn over
and then I'm going to put my hook in my fourth
chain.
Remember this is our second chain so we skip one more
which is our third and this is our
fourth.
Put our hook in there,
and notice I'm just catching the back loop on here.
I recommend catching the back loop on this foundation chain.
And let me finish this stitch,
and then I'll explain why I recommend just the back loop.
But I'm going to yarn over and pull up the loops,
and I have my three loops on my hook.
Yarn over, I'm going to pull through the first two,
and yarn over, pull through the second two.
So because we're counting that chain three as a double crochet,
I have that first double crochet,
and then I have a real double crochet that I've linked to it,
so that way I don't have a little
gappy hole because I have that chain three.
We're not going to use chain threes for our turning
chains, so we won't have that problem anymore.
That was the only place where we needed to link
I think a chain three.
So the reason that I said work in just
the back loop only for the foundation chain is
because the end of the pattern you're going
to connect the first row to the last row by
mattress stitching.
And when you only work in one loop,
you have a nice double loop to sew into and it looks
almost like a regular stitch,
it has that V stitch look so it's a lot easier to match
Up to your other ending row.
So that you can stay in line when you're sewing it all together.
So that's just a tip.
You don't have to follow it.
You can just grab two loops or whatever you prefer
when you work your foundation chain.
But that's just a little tip.
So now we're going to do some more double crochets.
We're just double crocheting
or linked double crocheting all the way across.
So now I have my middle bar here that's easy to see.
So I can grab that, yarn over, pull up my loop.
Now I'm going to my next chain.
And you can, um, forgo the linked double crochets altogether
if you don't like them, you can
just do this pattern with regular double crochets,
um, I really like the look of the linked,
I like how it creates a dense, not dense,
but a closed fabric without the dense, like
the dense feel of like a single crochet.
So as you work, you always go through that middle bar.
Pull up your loop instead of,
so this takes the place of your yarn over, usually you would
yarn over and then go into your stitch here.
This middle bar pulling up a loop takes the place of that yarn over
and it links it to
our previous stitch.
So we're going to do this all the way across and at the end we're going
to have 50 stitches total and it's very important that you have 50
so stop and count them to make sure and fix it if you don't
because all of our pattern relies on that 50 stitch count.
So remember to count your first chain 3
as one of your stitches.
Because it's counting for this row.
The rest of the rows we're not going to use a chain 3.
We're going to use a tall chain instead,
but make sure you don't forget to count it on this row.
Don't get to 49 and be like, I missed one, and you didn't.
You just didn't count your chain 3.
So keep going and we'll meet up at the end of this row.
Okay, I'm on my last double crochet, or linked double crochet,
let's say linked first, of row one, and you can see
that I have this nice, completely solid piece of work here,
and we're going to move on to row two.
So, now we're going to start talking about the tall chain.
And the tall chain is just going to take the place of a chain three.
So instead of having to do that linked chain three
that we did at the very beginning,
we're going to substitute with a tall chain
and a regular double crochet for our beginning of
our row. So what that means is I'm going to make
a chain that's as tall as my double crochet.
I'm kind of guesstimating because I'm, you know, it's not exact.
If, um, it's better to make it shorter than
your double crochet than taller than your regular double crochet.
So let me show you, um, if it's taller, so this is definitely
bigger than a double crochet that I would make with this hook size,
and I'll explain, um, where I'm working
my double crochet after I show you this little example.
You'll see that my tall chain sticks out, and I don't want it
to stick out, I want it to kind of disappear into the stitch.
So what I'm doing instead is making my tall chain probably
a little bit shorter than my double crochet would be.
I make a tall chain to bring my double crochet up to height.
So a chain three normally brings your work up
to the correct height so when you make
your very first double crochet, it's not squished.
So for example, if I just started working
a double crochet in this very first stitch
without any kind of chains or heights,
you'll see that it's pretty kind of squished down.
And then when I make my second one.
It's a lot higher than that first,
so I'm going to have funky edges if I don't have
anything bringing my stitches up to height.
So that's where that tall chain comes in.
And because it's a tall chain,
it kind of disappears into my very first stitches, which
is what I want.
Because if I counted my chain three as a stitch,
I would work my chain three, I would link it,
and then I would work my next double crochet
in this second stitch. I wouldn't work anything in this first stitch.
So what we're doing with
this tall chain is instead working in that very first stitch
because it's going to kind of
disappear in that very first double crochet.
Not completely, but good enough.
So we pull it up to a little bit below our normal double crochet height
and lock it in with another chain and then we're just going
to do a regular double crochet in that very first stitch.
So we start our rows and anything after chain three
with a regular double crochet and then we start linking.
So we're going to do five more double crochets,
one in each of our five stitches.
So we're going to put our hook underneath that bar.
Pull up the loop, go into our next stitch, and start double crochet.
Okay, I just finished all five of the linked double crochets,
so we have six in total.
And you'll see that my tall chain is just kind of sticking right there.
It's not really poking out.
It kind of disappears into the border of the scarf.
So you'll see that as we work that it's not very noticeable.
But, a good thing is we don't have to count it,
we actually have a stitch that we worked
in our very first stitch,
so it's easier to count our stitches, easier to work into our
final stitch of each of our rows.
So our next instructions are actually the pattern repeat brackets.
In your pattern and everything inside the brackets has
to be worked a certain number of times and it tells you at the end
of the brackets that we're going to do this repeat three times.
So if you're not used to brackets, all you do is just work it in order.
And then when you come to the end of the bracket,
go back to the beginning of the bracket and work it again.
So it says chain three.
We're just going to do three chains,
do them nice and tight size of your shaft because
you don't want real big loopy chains for this because
this is going to be the lacy design.
And it says skip your next two stitches,
so we're skipping one and two and we're working
I'm working into that third stitch.
Even though we chained three,
we're only skipping two stitches because our chains, they're going
to be pulled by single crochets
so that we get kind of a loopy opening instead of just
a straight across opening, which is boring.
So we want the chain three,
and then we're going to double crochet in our third stitch.
We're doing a regular double crochet
because there is nothing to link it to yet.
So that very first one will be a regular
and then we start doing our linked double crochets.
So it says DC in next 10 stitches or linked DC in next 10 stitches.
So we do that first one normally,
and then we start linking the remaining nine.
And then once we finish that, we start our repeat over,
and we do that repeat two more times.
So once you get to the end of the ten,
you're just going to chain three again, skip two, and do another ten.
So once I get to the ten, I'll show you the repeat again.
I'm doing number ten of our first of three repeats.
So now I'm at the end of my bracket, so I go back to the beginning.
So I do chain three.
I'm going to skip my next two stitches, I've already yarned over,
and I'm going to start my double crochet in my third stitch,
and then do my linked nine remaining double crochets.
So after I finish this group of ten,
I'm going to do that repeat one more time, another chain three,
skip two stitches, and link DC in the next ten stitches.
And when I finish that,
I'm still going to have some more stitches left over, so you'll
see some instructions after the brackets.
So when you see brackets,
you work everything inside the amount of times it tells you, and
then when you finish that, then you move on to your next instructions.
So once we finish these repeats,
I'll go over the finishing of this row with you.
Alright, I'm on my 10th linked double crochet of my last repeat.
And now we're moving on to the end of the row instructions.
So I'm doing another chain 3,
I'm skipping my next 2 stitches, and then it's telling
me to link double crochet in my last 6 stitches.
So I should have 6 left over after the skipped 2,
so I'm going to do 6 linked, remember that
very first one is just a regular double,
you see I have 5 left, I'm on track, I know I
I know I counted my stitches correctly,
which I already did before, but...
Just definitely show me if I didn't count correctly right now.
And now I'm at my final sixth linked double crochet
and I'm going to put it into the top
of that chain three because remember we started
with the chain three so we've got to work
into that chain three otherwise we're going to lose a stitch.
So now we're done with row two and it's time to move on to row three.
Okay so now for row three we're going to start
with our tall chain again and do our very
First, double crochet in that first stitch.
And then the instructions tell me to double crochet,
or link double crochet, in our next three stitches.
three more double crochets.
And then
our repeat begins again.
We'll have a total of four,
and now we're at our repeat.
So our repeat tells us that we're going to chain three.
We're doing our tight chains again.
And then we're going to single crochet in the chain three space below.
So this is our chain three space.
We're going to go all the way around it, so we're going to put
our hook through the center, yarn over and pull up our loop,
and single crochet. Notice I'm keeping
my single crochet nice and tight.
That's going to give me more definition for our lacy bits,
so make sure that you're keeping it nice and tight.
And then we're going to chain three again.
And do linked double crochets,
we're going to skip our next two stitches, so when you're
looking at linked double crochets,
you try to figure out which stitch is which, if it's
a little difficult to count them because they're all put together,
turn your work sideways
and count your V's instead,
count the top of your stitches, it's a lot easier to see.
So we don't count our chains, we just count the stitches,
so we have one, two, we're skipping
Skipping those, and then we're going to work into this third one,
so when we do our first
As a regular double crochet,
five remaining as linked,
and then we're going to do that
repeat two more times.
So work your six
and then start over your chain threes that are given in the brackets
and then we'll meet up at the end of the row
to finish off these instructions.
Last double crochet of the six for my repeat.
Now we just have this last little section left,
so we're going to chain three, single crochet
in our chain three space of our row below, chain three again.
We're going to skip our next two stitches, just like we've been doing,
and double crochet in the next. We're going to finish off
the row by doing three more linked double crochets.
So as you can see in that last stitch,
we actually have a double crochet and that tall chain.
So we just ignore the tall chain
and we only work into the double crochet.
So it makes it very easy because
our double crochet actually looks like a double crochet.
Into those two loops of my double crochet
and finish off the row for our next row of instructions.
On row four instructions,
we're going to do our tall chain as normal in our first double
crochet in our first stitch,
and then our instructions tell us to link double crochet
in our next stitch, and then we're going to do some really easy,
fast working across this
row.
So the next thing we're going to do is chain three,
and we're going to single crochet in
our chain three space of our row below,
and then we're going to chain three again.
And I see single crochet in our chain three space below again.
And then we're going to chain three again.
And now we're going to skip our two stitches,
and we're going to do two linked double crochets.
So one regular, and then one linked.
Okay, so that was the beginning
of our repeat, these two double crochets.
So now we're just going to do a chain three,
single crochet in our next spot, chain three
again, single crochet in our next spot.
Chain three again, and then we're going
to do our double crochets in the middle. So we skip two,
double crochet in our third spot,
and then link double crochet in the next stitch after.
So that's what we're doing all the way across,
we'll do that two more times, then we'll meet
up right at the end of the row.
Alright, we've got our last chain three of our repeat,
and now we're going to skip those
last two there,
and we're going to work a double crochet in our last two stitches.
So one in each of our last two stitches,
make a double, and then make double that last stitch,
and we'll be done with row four, and moving on to row five.
Alright, we are almost done with our heart.
This is going to be the last row of actual kind of lace work,
so we're going to do our tall chain, lock it in,
and then we're going to double crochet in our first stitch,
and then double, or link double, or second,
and then we're going to do another chain three,
and it's going to be right on top of our previous.
And then next we're going to do a double crochet
into that single crochet spot.
So we're going to go under the two loops
and catch it and do a regular double crochet.
And then we're putting two linked double crochets
in our chain three spot here.
So what we're doing is we're kind of replacing
the two that we skipped down below.
So we're going to put our hook through the middle.
Go straight through that big hole and pull up a loop,
pull through two, pull through
two.
Do that one more time in your chain two space,
I mean chain three space.
Pull through, pull through,
and then we're going to do one more linked double crochet
in that next single crochet
that we come to.
Then we're going to do another chain three over
this previous chain three.
Then we're going to double crochet in these next two stitches.
Do your regular double crochet
and we're just going to repeat
that over our next spaces that
we have till we get over to the end.
I'm just doing my last chain three of the row
and then I'm going to double crochet in those last two stitches.
Do regular double crochet,
then your next row is super easy.
We're just going to turn our work.
And start double crocheting all the way across again. So we'll
do our tall chain because we're linking all these double crochets.
Do a double crochet in that first stitch.
And then when you get to your chain
three spot, we're going to be doing
three double crochets in each
because we need to get our stitch count back up to 50.
And that's going to get us to 50. So make sure you're doing three.
Just remember it's a chain three.
So we're going to do three double crochets
in these
stitches.
You'll continue across doing your linked double crochet.
Do one in every stitch you come to and three around
your chain threes and you'll get up
to 50, not up to, you will get 50 double crochets at the end.
I'm on my 50th double crochet and I've just finished all of those rows.
You can see our little heart is starting to take shape.
And once we block it, it'll even open up even more.
Um, the next row, what we're going to be doing
is just another row of linked double crochet.
So we're going to space out these hearts
by two rows of linked double crochet.
So you're just going to do another 50 across,
and then we're going to start our repeat.
So this will be technically the last row
that I'm doing for the tutorial, because after
All you're going to do is start repeating the rows from here above.
So we'll have 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.
So you're just going to repeat rows 2 through 7 over and over again,
either the amount stated
on the pattern until you get to the finishing row.
Or until your yarn runs out,
so if you have yarn that's not the same as what I'm using,
then it picks chroma,
you can go ahead and just keep making the scarf until you run out
of yarn, or until it's as long as you want it.
Then, you're going to put your scarf together,
but you're actually, um...
One thing I want to point out is when you finish,
you're only going to do one row of double crochet.
So you're not going to do this very last row because
when you fold your scarf together and sew it together,
then you'll have two rows of the double crochet in between those two,
the beginning heart and your very ending heart.
So that way you don't have a three row space.
So make sure that you end with a row 6 repeat
as it states in the pattern and that's why
because you don't want to have 3 rows between this first heart
and your very last heart.
So just keep on doing your linked double crochet for this row
and then you're just going to
I'm going to repeat the rows over and over again
and that is going to be the entire pattern.
So if you need help with the mattress stitch,
I have tutorials on how to do that.
I also have tutorials on blocking,
so I recommend you block this when you're done to get the
lace to open up really nice and look very well.
So if you have any questions,
leave them below, and thanks for watching.
