We've got breaking news from the Detroit Red Wings.
This involves the future of the former captain, Dylan Larkin.
Let's get right to the sports director, Dan Miller.
What's going on here?
It's been going on for a while.
That's one of the problems.
Bottom line, as of now, Dylan Larkin doesn't have a future in Detroit.
Requested to trade during the offseason,
but with the power of his no-trade clause
limited the number of teams he'd accept as a new destination,
making it difficult for Detroit.
Apparently, he's added teams to the list,
but there's still been no trade.
Within the last hour, interim GM Sean
Horkoff released a statement saying,
quote, Dylan Larkin has informed us that he will
no longer play for the Detroit Red Wings.
We are disappointed by his decision, particularly given
his obligations to the organization and his teammates.
We have therefore suspended Dylan without pay.
We will continue to explore trade opportunities involving Dylan.
In addition to needing his approval,
any trade must also be in the best interest of the Detroit Red Wings
and support the organization's long-term goals.
I want to thank and commend our coaches and players for continued focus
and being committed to competing every day.
That is the end of the statement there.
Now, bottom line is this.
This has been a mess from the beginning.
Dylan Larkin gave the team.
Three teams he would accept a trade
to when he initially requested a trade.
Wings couldn't work anything out there.
Bottom line, he's recently added seven more.
So there's now 10 teams with which Detroit can talk.
Is there a deal there that they deem as acceptable?
You've got to hope so, because Dylan Larkin sitting at home
and the Red Wings playing hockey without him
and getting nothing in return is not good for the organization.
He has a contract that he can dictate the terms of where he plays.
He has a no-trade clause in his contract.
That is an absolute hammer, and that has been one of the things
that has hampered Detroit's efforts to make this deal.
Why is he upset with Detroit?
He just, it got to the point in the offseason where he did
not want to be here anymore.
And this is something that people said maybe it
was his relationship with Steve Yzerman.
Steve Yzerman is no longer in charge of the Red Wings.
They thought maybe that would bridge the gap and he'd come back.
Didn't happen.
Now, clearly, it's not going to happen.
He's played his last game in Detroit.
There's no money now.
Well, no money suspended without pay.
There will be money as soon as the deal is met.
We'll see what happens here.
All right, Dan Miller, thank you.
