A frightening attempt to abduct a child in Chicago
and a car theft that unfolded just
minutes later.
Police say a man first tried to kidnap a child
and then ended up at a car wash where surveillance
video captured him stealing another vehicle
while someone was vacuuming it.
Leslie Moreno is live on scene with all the details
and walk us through what we know.
Well, Anita, thankfully, the abduction was unsuccessful,
but certainly a scary moment for that family.
Right after the attempted abduction,
the man drove to this car wash here behind me.
Dropped off the van, which appears to be stolen
and then stole another vehicle.
Take a look at this video here.
Fox Chicago obtained surveillance footage
that shows the moment a man abandons a white box van
and jumps into the driver's seat of
another vehicle. This happened at the $5 car wash along Fullerton.
You can see a woman
there in the back of the white SUV vacuuming her car
when the man gets in and takes off.
For a second, the woman tries to stop him as she drives away.
A police officer on scene told us this all started
with an attempted child abduction along Damon Avenue.
The attempt was unsuccessful,
but the man then allegedly drove to the car wash,
which is less than a block away,
in that van before stealing the other vehicle.
Take a listen to this scanner audio
from Chicago Police just moments after the attempted kidnapping.
It was an attempted kidnapping.
It wasn't successful. We have the kid right here.
I'm getting more information from the victim.
She believes that it was attempted carjacking,
but she was trying to get her children out of the vehicle
when he attempted to take the vehicle.
It's unclear if the man who stole the vehicle has been captured
or if the vehicle that was stolen has been recovered.
Anita?
Leslie, it's just so incredibly scary and eye-opening to even watch
it play out there in that surveillance video that you received.
Was anything in the van?
Yeah, so we did see detectives.
They opened the back of the van maybe about an hour and
a half ago. It appears to be some sort
of construction van. We did see a lot of
Construction materials, things like drywall and buckets.
We did also see a couple who pulled up to the car wash here
and drove off with a van.
Potentially the owners, they did speak to the detectives.
They looked at the van and then drove off.
So potentially again, the van may have been stolen.
Again, we have reached out to Chicago police to see
if they have any other information,
but we have not heard back just yet.
Okay, Leslie, thank you.
Hopefully we get more information soon.
