Hey everyone, it's Sam here and today I'm going to show you how
to make this, I'm calling it my trap door selection box,
but I think this could be any door.
So you could turn this into a festive door,
have a nice wreath in the middle.
It doesn't even have to be a door, it's just a fun gatefold style box
that when you open it, I've got these treats inside.
Now I am going to add more and I'm also going to probably add a couple
of spiders on this as well, just so there's a little bit of a fright.
I might have boo or something,
but I just wanted to fill it a little bit more. It can fit a lot in.
These are little treats from a selection bag that I got in the co-op.
You can see there's loads of room.
This is three quarters of an inch deep so you've got plenty of
space there but it can also have little gifts in there,
jewellery, makeup. I think it looks like a
window, it looks like one of those mirrors
that you have in the window. You could easily turn
this into a makeup mirror which I think would look really nice as well.
I didn't use any dies to make this one.
I cut the apertures with my trimmer. You can just use your
scissors if you don't have a trimmer
and I love the caution tape on this one as well.
So let's get started and show you how to make it.
So I've already made one of the boxes here
so I'm going to show you how to make the other one
and then the main box when you open it.
I've also got some twine.
I mean I was going to like wrap it all around to really make it
like do not enter so I may still use that.
When we get to the kind of locking part I will
talk through other options
but i do have a lot of these from i just had lots of hardware when
i was you know making tons of 3d makes
so i will link to these ones in the description
box but you could just use hook
and loop you could use some brads and tie some string there
are so many ways to do the closure
so i will explain that in more detail when we get to it
Okay so I've already gone ahead and cut the aperture
but I'm going to again talk you through
all of these steps now. So for the main box this is 11 by 8
and along that way first along the 11
inch side you want to score it three quarters of an inch,
five and a quarter, six and ten and a
half. Then rotate so that half inch tab is at the bottom
and you're going to score it three quarters
It's a quarter of an inch.
six and three quarters and seven and a half
and then where you've got your two and then
where you've got your three quarter
and then your three quarter and then your half inch
it's this first section that you want to cut your aperture.
Now I haven't used a die I used
my trimmer to cut it out so you don't need
again you don't need any specific dies to
make this project
but what you choose to add you know for those bits is up to you.
But if you do want to use a die to cut it you want something
that's around three and a half
by five. I just basically did a half an inch border around
the score lines there. So get that one all
ready and then for your smaller boxes you'll want two pieces of six
and a half by eight. Along the
six and a half side you're going to score it three quarters,
three, three and three quarters and six.
Again you've got your half inch tab here
so just rotate that around so it's at the bottom
and you're going to score it three quarters,
six and three quarters and seven and a half.
Pop it back this way, you've got your three quarter section,
three quarter section and then the half inch at the end.
It's that section there where the half inch tab
is that you want to cut your next aperture in.
You can see how that looks because
this is one side of the front of the trapdoor.
So when they open it, they're going to see the treats inside there
and then the treats inside the big one.
And again, I've just done a half inch frame around.
You can see here. Yeah. Half inch. Give or take.
I'm going to, yeah.
It's DIY. We don't mind. This is one and a half by five and a quarter.
If you've got a die that you want to use,
it could be ovals, you could have a few circles,
or you can just draw a, you know, with your ruler,
draw your aperture and then cut it out
with your scissors. And then I've got my acetate here
to stick behind each one. So I've already
added the tape. For these ones,
I've cut two pieces of two by five and three quarters.
You want it to sit within that space
and then this one here is a four and a quarter by five and
three quarters and that's going to stick over that one there
so I'm going to take the tape off and
stick those both down. Fold and burnish all the score lines.
Okay so start off with the large box
first so you want it so you've got
your three quarter section along the bottom and the half
inch tab on the right hand side you're going
to snip up all of the score lines to that first
score line.
And then this corner one here,
you can just remove that completely and then just take a
little wedge off of there because that's going to create our tab.
OK, and then come along here
and you can just snip down so that then kind of frees up
and just cut that all the way.
Now, I want this one, that's how it's going to look when you open it.
So I want it to open this way.
I don't want you to see, you know, this bit all facing the front.
It's going to look neater having that facing away, like so.
So this whole section, if you come along the top here,
you cut down past the first score line down
to the second, there and there.
This whole piece you can remove.
If you've been watching the Halloween series,
I've been making a lot of boxes, all very similar,
but they go together differently in their different sizes.
Then you've got these two sections here.
You just want to cut kind of three
quarters of the way up from the square,
just your little tabs.
You don't have to be too precious.
Okay.
And then just take the sliver just a little bit off the sides here.
You want this to all obviously lock nice and stay closed.
Okay.
Then if you go back along the bottom
where you've got your squares here,
just cut a little wedge off of each side
and just tidy up the edges.
Just make sure, like there, I can see the score lines.
I'm just going to cut up, remove that piece.
Just run your glue all down your half-inch tab.
Oh, I didn't take a wedge off the top part there.
Again, it's not the end of the world,
but again, it just keeps everything concealed.
So I'm just going to fold that all over
and then fold your three-quarter-inch side over there.
Fold that back. This is a great size box on its own.
Like with many of my 3D projects, there's a
lot of boxes and, you know, we kind of stick them together.
So, you know, that could be the perfect
size for a particular gift that you've got.
I love the aperture. I think it's quite nice, maybe a
little scarf or something in there, some socks.
You know, it's a great stocking stuffer size. So
yeah, hopefully you can get more use out of these.
And then I'm going to stick the back one down
Now first, add your glue to your tabs.
Just run your glue all on that one.
Just fold that all down.
Just grab a ruler and go in there
and just make sure that's all secure.
Okay, and then check this is all going to close nicely.
Fold in the sides and you want that to lock in.
Now, if it's still a little bit stubborn,
you can always take a little bit more off,
but that is locked in.
I mean, the treats are going to be secured in place
with a little glue dot anyway,
but I don't want that falling open.
So that's that one ready.
As you can see now, when that's hinged onto the side,
now it's going to look like this one here.
Same kind of way, really.
You want to make sure you've got your three quarter inch section here
and then a half inch on this side.
I'm going to cut up to the first score
line along all of these ones here.
And then this little section here we can remove like before.
Take a little wedge off of that end
and take a little wedge off of the squares along here.
That one.
Remove that section completely.
And then along here, you're going to cut down past
the first score line and down to the second.
And then this bit we can remove
completely or wedge off of there.
And then again, with these ones,
just take a few cuts of the way to remove.
OK, so this is now we're going to come around
and stick together and add our glue all down.
And then this time with the base, because it actually is going to open
and you're going to see this when you open it,
you then have to join there.
I think visually from the outside that looks nicer. So I'm going
to flip it over and that's going to be the last one to stick down.
So I'm going to fold that one up and then add my glue.
Again, just go in with your ruler and then the same again.
Check that it's nice and secure. If not, again,
I'm just going to take a little sliver off of the fronts of the tabs.
And I can see a little bit of a score line on that one.
And we can close that up.
Now, what you might find with your frame is the tab might come through.
You might see, yeah, I can just see a bit of it there.
Can you see that?
I'm just going to trim just a little bit off.
Some of you may not because you might have a thicker frame.
That one's a bit wonky on that one anyway,
but my nephew's not going to notice.
And you might find it may just catch on the acetates.
You might just have to work around that.
But there we go.
We've got our lovely box and they're going to stay
and now we need to add the hinges.
So I've got two pieces here that are one and a half by six.
And I've scored right down through
the middle at three quarters of an inch.
Do that on both pieces and because these are going
to be a hinge just give them a good burnish
in both directions. Now the craft card is really thick,
I'm going to ink this all up in a minute
as well when it's together just to make it all a bit more grungy.
They're going to stick down
the side like this, you'll see it will cover nicely.
You could obviously add more decoration
So I think I'm just going to add my glue all over.
Like that, and just cover the whole thing.
I'm going to add quite a lot of glue
because the craft card does absorb a lot of it as well.
So I just want to make sure there's enough on there.
The edges, all covered.
And then I'm just going to stick it down onto that first
because I can use my desk to push it down.
And then make sure it's obviously the right way up.
Bring that right up to it.
Just make sure everything is nice and flush.
Don't be tempted to try and open it just yet.
You want that glue to dry
because you're just going to kind of pull it apart otherwise.
Okay so this is how it's looking.
So this is how it's looking. I mean it looks like a mirror
doesn't it? Makeup. You could have all makeup
in that and it's like a dressing table and it stands
really nice as well. We've got all the access
that we need to get the treats out. So to decorate the
front here you'll see I've already cut myself some faux hinges.
Now these are just pieces of two by
my three quarters.
Just cut that shape out.
These little bits here are just some stickers.
They were from the range.
No, the works, I think.
This is, I just thought the stars look quite cute,
but you could use little silver, you know, enamel dots
or some embellishments, some sequins.
You might have some nouveau drops
or any kind of medium drops.
You could use those.
And then if you wanted to obviously use this,
which I'm going to,
because I think it looks brilliant on this trapdoor,
what you could do is take some gold card
Okay, and just to kind of give the look of, you know, of hardware,
I'm just going to trim that.
What's this here?
It's actually half an inch by, say, one and a half.
Glue to one side and then put hook and loop under the other,
and then they can just lift that up.
You know, or it could be a magnet if you wanted to.
You could also add some, if you've got maybe
like some beads, like a wooden bead,
add a wooden bead on each side and then get some string, wrap
it and attach it to one of the beads underneath it
and then do like a figure of eight closure.
That's another nice idea. You could just wrap it with,
like I said, caution tape or some nice string.
I know Helen's Simply Made Crafts, in her range, she did a padlock.
I do have it, but it's massive,
but it could be quite fun, so you could use that.
There are also metal padlocks that you can get little decorative ones.
There is many, many ways, but I do want to use these.
I've not used them before in a project.
I've got lots of them.
I'm just going to use some hot glue and get those in place there.
And then I'm going to look at my sentiment,
which is going to stick inside on the acetate.
And I'm going to put all of my treats in.
I think I'm going to need to get some more.
I don't think I've got enough here.
And I'm going to ink it all up as well
and just make it a bit more distressed.
I know someone is going to ask
so I thought I would just share this last step but I remembered
I have a very cool stamp set which is very old
but you might still be able to get hold of it
and it is from Hobby Arts and it's Do Not Open Till Christmas
and you've got the caution strips. So how good do these look?
On here so I'm just sticking them right across
and I'm going to snip down through the middle
because I just think it's a bit easier that way
but it also has do not open until Christmas but
I'm just going to mask off the bottom
and I'm just going to have the do not open and I'm going to
have that across there as well so that'll be the front
and then I'm going to finish the inside.
Okay, so there is the finished trapdoor,
or just doors, it doesn't have to be a trapdoor,
I could have also used my wood grain embossing folder
on all of this as well, I think it's,
like I said, going to make a lovely Christmas door kind
of selection box, I think that would
work really well as well, and then you just open the little latch.
And then you've got your treats inside.
I need more. And I know I haven't added
any more decoration in here yet because I think I
just want to wait till I've got the rest of the
sweets in. I might have a spider coming down here.
I've got my haunting times and I've got
another Halloween set as well.
And you've got your spiders here. I think one of them coming
down there will look really good. Maybe another one on the side here.
as well she could have a few you know extra decorations
but it works brilliantly and it's
a really nice piece again great for a stocking stuffer
if you want to do it as a festive scene
but this is going to go let me grab I've got
a load of eyes in here as well that one's going to
go in with the tombstone the eyes
and I've got another project that I'm going to hopefully
squeeze in in time and then he's just got some
other fun Halloween bits that I've got for him
from the charity shops and he's got a little game
as well that's going to go in there
So I hope you've enjoyed this project from me today.
Coming up now will be the playlist with
all of my other Halloween makes in it so you can go
and check that out if you want some more
inspiration and like I said think outside the box
although I'm making these for Halloween a lot of
them can easily be changed just by simply changing the colours
and your papers and you've got them
for other occasions. Make sure you subscribe,
drop me a comment, let me know what you think
and give the video a thumbs up and I'll see you in the next one.
