Pickled herring with boiled potato and onion, served as staple food in Russia and Latvia for centuries. We cannot imagine Midsummer or Christmas celebrations without it. And it is still usually served the old, pickled way. This is a recipe for the more Baltic-style herring, which is first pickled and then serves as a starter - zakuska with a shot of vodka. The sliced red onion give a lovely crunchy texture. Perfect for a picnic, or enjoyed as a starter, this makes an appetising alternative to the standard potato salad. Tasty, inexpensive and easy to prepare, this dish make a satisfying choice
Hi guys! Hello everyone!
Today I'm going to make a Russian zakuska. It's pickled herring
with boiled potatoes and red onions.
It's really great. We usually have it as a starter
with a shot of vodka before you have the main course
and it's really quick and easy recipe
and I hope you enjoy it.
We are going to need sugar, salt, red onion, marinated herring,
lemon, fresh parsley or dill, one potato
and one tablespoon of sunflower oil. Cut your
red onion into nice discs.
Take a small bowl and place all your onion inside. Add squeezed
lemon juice on top. Add salt and sugar.
We are going to leave our onion to marinate for
about 20 to 30 minutes.
Cut your herring into nice bite sized pieces just across, just like
that. Once your potato has cooled down we
are going to peel the skin off. It should
come off quite easily, just pull and drag.
We are going to cut the potato into nice discs.
Take a cookie cutter like
this and then cut out nice little squares.
You can use any shapes you like.
Just like that.
Place all your
ingredients
into a bowl.
Now gently mix all the ingredients together.
I hope you enjoyed
this beautiful
and super quick recipe.
