The secret to awakening is in what goes wrong | Eckhart Tolle

A questioner asks Eckhart Tolle whether, at the level of the deep I, we are all the same. If what is beyond form, thought and memory is one light, are we individuals at all? At the deepest level, he says, there is no individuality. The feeling of being you goes some way down, deeper than the body, and then it merges with something vast. People fear this, because they think it means they will not be there. But the feeling of "I" is already that deeper thing, mixed up with your history. He offers a test. Without looking to memory, without any past at all, what does it feel like to be you? Are you still there? Something is, and it is not your story. Then the movie. There is one light in the projector, and the film breaks it into characters and events on the screen. Every character is the light, partly obscured. Imagine those characters, acting out their script, beginning to ask who they are, and following the light back to its source. That is awakening in the middle of the drama. And every drama needs things to go wrong. A movie where nothing goes wrong puts you to sleep. Titanic in which the ship arrives safely in New York is a film nobody would watch. The same is true of a life. As soon as you arrive in it, things start going wrong, and that is not the failure of the script; it is how consciousness evolves. There is no deep awakening inside a comfort zone, any more than a greenhouse plant has the strength to survive outdoors. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session.
