Marty from AFTV here with Laurie after Arsenal
going out on penalties to Fleetwood Town
in the Carabao Cup.
One word, mate.
One word.
Embarrassing.
And before I go any further,
I do want to shout out Fleetwood.
Well done to Fleetwood Town.
I would imagine,
I don't know too much about Fleetwood Town,
but I would imagine that's probably their best result
in their history.
And they deserved it.
Not because they played us off the park.
It wasn't that type of game.
I think what Fleetwood did, to their credit,
It was they had a game plan,
which was to nullify ourselves, keep it tight.
And they managed to do that.
And the tactics worked.
So, shout out to their coach for getting the tactics right.
And I've got to be honest, mate,
and I said this to you on the watch along,
that when it got to about 65, 70 minutes, and I said, you know what?
It's looking like this is going to go to penalties.
I was not confident.
Yeah.
Because we were playing so poorly.
And what I can't quite work out was whether it's just one of them days
where nothing goes for you
or were we maybe a bit complacent a bit too overconfident going in
I mean I didn't see any lack of effort
so um I wouldn't want to just put it out there that we
were overconfident and we're arrogant
or I don't think it was anything like that I just think that
we just didn't play well right
from the start you could see there I can't remember an Arsenal game
obviously with a possible exception
of Brighton where there were so many players off it right
from the start we just wasn't
and I must admit Marty I'm a little concerned at the lack of goals
from the attack there's been a few games
this season where we've been the better team and we
we scraped through from goals from other areas
of the pitch yeah tonight was a absolute night
to forget for Kai Havertz he had an absolute nightmare
in front of goal today and you know
what I'm going to give him a little bit of credit actually yeah
because he played so poorly that I
was worried for him in the penalties
so when he stepped up to take his penalty i was thinking you
know what given the kind
of game he's had it wouldn't surprise me if he missed it but he
actually put the penalty away well
but yeah, him, uh, Victor Houghton, I was pleased for him
that he got a goal but he was off it, um, even Max
was off it, I was just coming on to that because
I wasn't being rude, I was looking obviously
the Mac, they're replaying the Max Dowman red card on
the screen in a variety of different angles in slow-mo
and obviously I just wanted to get your
take on it and, uh, I've seen
that in a few, yeah, I've seen it broken down, I just want to get your
take on it. To me it was a sending off, you can't kick out like
that, I mean, the, I know you are one
of a few people I've spoken to said
that the challenge was a little too strong and listen
Max Dowman is a tremendous talent, he's
a young man, what, 16 going on 17, he's young, you know, I'm
saying um this will be a lesson for him
to learn tonight, you know, I'm saying, uh, you can see that
the manager was not too happy about what he'd done
because when he got sent off,
that was pretty much,
he knew he weren't going to come back from that and score
So it's cost the team
And listen, I don't want to over-deliberate on it
but he was in the wrong.
You can't kick out like that.
You run the risk of getting sent off
And once you go down to 10 men in a game like this
it was always going to be difficult.
That wasn't the reason why we didn't get the result tonight
because we were playing poorly long before he did that.
So, that was just another black mark, really
on what was a humiliating night, ultimately
So, Anfield Sunday
You know what? I would say this, yeah
So, obviously, what happened tonight was, I didn't see that coming.
You didn't see that coming.
No, I mean, we were predicting four, fives and sixes, yeah?
So, yeah, it was embarrassing, like I said,
to go out of this competition to fleet with.
However, the one sliver of comfort
and positivity that I can take from tonight
is that those players tonight will be feeling embarrassed.
I'm sure the manager will let him know how he feels about it.
And I'm backing the guys to bounce back on Sunday
and this will probably motivate them to perform
even at a higher level than what we would normally do.
So, yeah, you know what?
I don't think that this result...
I guess what I'm saying is I don't think this result
will have a bearing on what we see on Sunday against Liverpool.
I hope not, anyway.
Well said, Laurie.
