Albania has introduced fines up to 5,500 euros for anyone
who is present at a demonstration
that turns violent in an attempt
to manage daily anti-government protests in the capital
Tirana.
The measures were adopted
by Prime Minister Edi Rama's government on Wednesday.
They also allow police to restrict gatherings
in certain areas if there is a risk of violence
and introduce sanctions for online calls for violence.
The protests began peacefully in May over
a luxury hotel project linked to US President
Donald Trump's family, located in a nature reserve.
In mid-October, they grew into wider demonstrations
over alleged corruption, problems in healthcare,
and a lack of opportunities for young people.
Clashes between protesters
and police have left more than 350 people injured.
Official estimates put damage caused
by the protests at more than 2 million euros.
The new measures take effect immediately,
but must be approved by parliament within
and 45 days to remain in force.
