Lyndon B. Johnson - Civil Rights at Home, War Abroad Documentary
Lyndon B. Johnson documentary: the 36th president's Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act, the Great Society and the escalation of the Vietnam War.
A former schoolteacher from the Texas Hill Country, Lyndon Baines Johnson rose through Congress to become Senate majority leader and then John F. Kennedy's vice president. Sworn in aboard Air Force One after Kennedy's assassination in Dallas in November 1963, he pushed through the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, beat Barry Goldwater in a landslide and launched the Great Society, including Medicare and Medicaid. At the same time the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution opened the way to a vast escalation of the war in Vietnam, and in March 1968 he announced that he would not seek re-election.
