Tonight, questions surround the death
of a Hitchcock woman whose body was recovered
inside of a home that had caught fire over
the weekend in Galveston County.
Police say 46-year-old Brandi Gregg's death is suspicious
and unrelated to that fire.
Fox 26's Jillian Hartman speaking with a man
who says he was there when her body was discovered.
Jillian.
That's right.
So today we went by the scene and I spoke with a man
who said he was there when the
fire broke out on Sunday. And then he was also there days later
when Brandy's body was discovered.
So here's what we know about the case.
Police say this morning they were called to this home along
North Railroad Avenue near Helen Road just after midnight
for a report of an unconscious woman
inside. Investigators identified her as 46-year-old Brandy Gregg,
who lived at the home.
Hitchcock police say other people who live there returned to the
property to retrieve some personal belongings after Sunday's fire.
And that's when they discovered her body.
Investigators say her death is not related to the fire.
Authorities say people were inside the house
when the fire broke out on Sunday.
The fire did damage the home, but no injuries were reported.
Now, the cause of that fire still remains under investigation.
Assistant Chief Jeff Evans tells me the home
was thoroughly searched after the fire.
And based on evidence, Evans says Brandy's body was not inside the home
when the fire happened.
He also says she had no burn marks, gunshot wounds, or stab wounds.
An autopsy is now underway to determine how she died.
Today, I spoke with a man who says he lives on the property.
He helped get people out of the house when the fire started.
and he says he did not see Brandy at the time.
He also mentioned that he was there when her body was found.
My brother's girlfriend was looking through the stuff in the kitchen
where Brandy's room was to see if she could find some of her stuff.
Because her and Brandy, they always shared each other's stuff,
so she was trying to see if she could find some of her belongings
and happened to move a tote or two that was blocking where she was
underneath the bed and happened to see her.
That's when she had a startled scream and stuff,
And then she said, it's Brandy.
And then I was like, I just knew what she was talking about.
And I just immediately dropped down and started crying.
I was like, I walked off the property just screaming,
cussing loud as I could because I was so mad.
Wow.
Jillian, do investigators know where she may have been killed?
So I spoke with the assistant chief and he tells me it's unclear
whether she was killed inside the home or somewhere else.
Investigators also believe her death occurred after Cruz cleared
the scene on Sunday night.
And before her body was discovered this morning.
So police are asking anyone with information
to call the Hitchcock Police
Department.
And right now this is an ongoing homicide investigation.
Back to you, Caroline.
