A major earthquake, measured between 6.6 and 7.0 magnitude, struck off the coast of Yilan, Taiwan. Occurring at a depth of approximately 60–70 km where two tectonic plates meet, the quake triggered a tsunami warning, though buoy data confirmed no tsunami occurred. The event released energy equivalent to 7.5 atomic bombs and was felt across the island, from northern to southern Taiwan.
James Kaufman, World News Report Today.
Ladies and gentlemen, according to the USGS,
we've had a major 6.6 magnitude earthquake
just off the coast of Taiwan.
I believe this was originally reported as a 6.7
and downgraded slightly.
It came in as a 6 on the DYFI, a 6 on the SHAPE map,
and it had an associated tsunami warning with it.
The depth the USGS gives is 67.5 kilometers.
It did occur where two plate tectonic boundaries
are trying to get together right there on Taiwan.
We've looked at this area many times.
You can see one plate ends right here, and it picks up right here,
and that's happened right between them.
It's an aftershock of a 4.5.
I'm sure there's several other aftershocks.
USGS only covers 4.0 aftershocks or larger.
Again, a 6.6 with a tsunami warning.
And I believe that, yes, in fact, this is off the coast of Yilan,
Taiwan, i.e. the associated tsunami warning.
Now, although Taiwan is on a volcanic ridge,
there are no active volcanoes right where this occurred.
And we'll take a look at that gap there in the plates again.
There's several. There's one here and here.
The black are gaps where they believe the plate will come together.
that is right on top of that gap should
be centered more in the well i believe a bit more
to the east however a 6.6 is nothing
to mess with main source usgs
and again they gave it a depth of
68 kilometers Bradbury Shake came
in at 6.7 i believe that was the original print
60 kilometers the french came in at 6.2
at 61 kilometers let's get some detailed information
on that quake we're gonna jump from volcanoes
and earthquakes.com to volcano discovery and we had a
very strong magnitude 6.6 earthquake approximately
four hours ago let's get some more information on
this all right even though
this was offshore we had over 135 shake reports here it says 127 this
has gone up a 6.6 here again i believe it came in as a 6.7
and it looks like we have a depth
of 68 kilometers and it looks like it released 7.5
atomic bombs worth of energy or the equivalent
of and i'm not going to try to ruin this but
this is the closest volcano uh Kueishantao
just to guess USGS
is our main source here here is our shake map
this is just after it occurred
they had 120 shake reports we're over 135 reports now
this was felt all the way down in southern
Taiwan and it was in northern Taiwan offshore
so a pretty impressive quake we do have some
video of the people on the island uh nothing tragic
but we do have some videos it's going to
be interesting comparing earthquake data
from different reporting agencies there was only
one aftershock believe it or not it's unusual
and that was the 4.5 that we did report
says it right here unbelievably start out with the USGS
our main source is 6.6 68 kilometers of depth
Followed by Raspberry Shake, 6.7, 60 kilometers of depth.
We have our French coming in at 6.27,
plus or minus 0.12, 61 kilometers of depth.
So the depth is pretty much nailed at about 60 to 70 kilometers here.
We have our Central Weather Bureau here, which
is in fact part of Taiwan, and they came in at 7.0.
So, keep that in mind.
They obviously probably have more geophones than anyone in the area.
We have our Germans coming in at 6.6, 66 kilometers of depth.
We have the Indonesians coming in at 6.2,
66 kilometers of depth.
The Australians coming in at 6.6, 61 kilometers of depth.
The Incorporated Research Institute for Seismology at 6.6.
And that's going to be also at 68 kilometers of depth.
We have the Italians coming in at 6.4, 90 kilometers of depth.
Everyone has rang in on this one.
The Europeans coming in at 6.6, 69 kilometers of depth.
And the Philippines coming in at 6.6, 68 kilometers of depth.
And Japan finally comes in at a 6.7,
35 kilometers of depth.
Only one aftershock of 4.5 as discussed.
We did bounce over to the National Data Buoy Center.
No buoys in event mode whatsoever in the area.
So there was no tsunami created.
All right, this is a university in Yilan.
and there was a chaotic evacuation
as you can see during this it's really strange this is at
nighttime i did check it with Grok it's
from the 6.7 magnitude earthquake there in Taiwan
and you can see that it's pretty chaotic there now what
is so strange you ask well i've got some
additional footage and it's during the daytime now it could
be the aftershock the 4.5 aftershock
let's take a look at that now i did check Grok
and this also was generated by the 6.6 to 7.0
earthquake september 27th 2025
and well i'm not quite sure if this is the aftershock or what in
the morning here is the video these people
are caught on a suspension bridge the worst place
you want to be i would say one
of the worst places uh except for an old shanty i guess
and you can see that you can actually see
that bridge moving quite a bit this is all made to
move it's constructed for earthquakes
and see those light poles moving quite a bit there
they're probably just about used to this you can see
that some of them just start going again
i.e it's over and that was it i did want
to show you all that video footage so definitely the
quake of the week a 6.6 6.7 magnitude earthquake
just offshore of ilan taiwan about 67 kilometers
in depth. Associated tsunami warning.
No tsunami seen via the buoys on a volcanic ridge where two
plates are trying to come together and meet.
What else do we have to report? Well, 7.5 atomic bombs
worth of energy released with this one.
With that, God bless, guys. Please share. Give us a thumbs up.
Ring that bell for critical future updates. God bless and stay safe.
