Perhaps the most awe-inspiring sight I have witnessed in Grand Teton National Park or anywhere else.

We rolled up just as a significant portion of the wild and free-roaming Teton Bison Herd was set into motion. Hundreds of thousands of pounds of muscle stampeding en masse. The herd charged in from further out in the prairie and then along a wood and wire fence (used to pen in some trail horses permitted to graze in the park). Until, in a rush of organized chaos, the bison went under, over, and crashing straight through the barrier and across the road.

As the herd was already on the move when we arrived, I am not certain what started it. But the sheer power, dust, and raw energy of a thundering herd like this is a vivid reminder of what the American West must have been like when tens of millions of bison roamed the plains.

Footage captured by @strategist.to.naturalist while guiding for Jackson Hole EcoTour Adventures using a Swarovski Optik ATX 95mm spotting scope and Ollin Snapshot adapter system.
